Pressure and “demons”: Will Joseph explains how Lando Norris faces tough situations. The British driver, who dominated the Singapore Grand Prix, is no stranger to small mistakes when it comes to capitalizing on an advantage. Start issues have been a part of this season, and even at Marina Bay, he risked ending his race early. But Will Joseph assures: McLaren is working well.
Consistency will be crucial in Lando Norris’ World Championship pursuit: Max Verstappen has shown he can limit damage, especially where McLaren holds a clear advantage. The British driver will need to do the same if the RB20 becomes particularly competitive again, or if he faces difficult decisions. The season is still long, and the mistakes made during the summer must not be repeated.
No more false starts, no more first-lap errors, no more collapses under pressure: Lando Norris must prove he can be a World Champion, especially on the mental side. His opponent, after all, is a master in this area and will be ready to exploit any slip-up. Will Joseph, McLaren’s race engineer for Lando Norris, has full confidence in his protégé.
Demons and pressure: McLaren’s cure for Lando Norris
Interviewed on the F1 Nation podcast, Will Joseph explained the work McLaren has done: “[Before the race] we talk about the strengths, analyze how we drove on Friday, and what opportunities there are. We don’t focus on things others say are a problem that we don’t necessarily see.”
“In the factory, we reviewed race starts, for example. We thought we’d find something special, but it wasn’t as bad as everyone wanted to believe. We discuss the things under our control, and the results are showing. We’ve silenced some demons. [After Singapore] people can’t say anymore that we can’t be in the lead after the first lap. [Lando Norris] did a fantastic job. From the first lap, we had good pace, and he showed how fast he can be. It was incredible. None of us expected such a large gap. The pace was phenomenal.” – Will Joseph concluded.
