Max Verstappen and Mercedes: Wolff says no
Following Max Verstappen’s recent comments on the new Formula 1 regulations, Red Bull’s lack of competitiveness, and Mercedes’ current dominance, paddock chatter has already begun speculating about a possible move of the Dutch driver to Toto Wolff’s team from 2027. According to the Austrian team principal and co-owner, however, such talk is completely unfounded.
Wolff: “Mercedes is happy with Russell and Antonelli”
When asked directly about Max Verstappen potentially joining Mercedes—a team he has previously raced for, including a notable win in the 4 Hours of Nürburgring before being disqualified—Toto Wolff was very clear. “The surprising thing is that these crazy rumors are circulating as early as March, and it’s equally foolish to talk about them in July. I don’t know who started this story,” Wolff explained.
To reinforce his position, the Mercedes team principal emphasized his full confidence in George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. “We have two drivers with whom we hold long-term contracts. I couldn’t be more satisfied or happy with them. They are both delivering excellent performances, so there’s absolutely no reason to consider a lineup change or to bring in other drivers. And I say this with the utmost respect for Max,” concluded Toto Wolff.
Toto Wolff’s comments therefore serve as a firm “hands-off” warning to the rest of the paddock regarding his driver roster. While the Dutchman’s dissatisfaction with the current performance gap at Red Bull is evident, Mercedes appears intent on rewarding the loyalty and speed of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Based on the content of these latest statements, the Brackley team is focused entirely on maintaining its internal harmony while it sits at the top of the standings.
