Despite Lewis Hamilton soon becoming an official Ferrari driver, Toto Wolff has spoken yet again about his protégé and the magic he brought to Mercedes during his twelve years in the “silver.”
Toto Wolff recounts Lewis Hamilton’s immense growth at Mercedes
“Whatever I say now wouldn’t do justice to how good he is,” Wolff stated on the High Performance podcast. Magic. And this combines all the skills. Genius, talent, his father’s early education, a strong work ethic, intelligence, social intelligence, fearless attitude, and constant self-improvement.”
According to Toto Wolff’s description, Lewis Hamilton cannot be fully explained; he is simply destined, and the combination of all his qualities made him so: “I could probably find words for another minute if I thought about it because he is a seven-time world champion and has won countless races. From that perspective, there’s never been anyone like him.”
The Mercedes team principal also highlighted how the English champion has, over the years, turned his weaknesses into strengths.
“If you doubt yourself and question things, you strive to improve. It keeps you sharp, and that’s what makes you better. If you think you’re the real deal, that’s when you fail. I’ve seen that happen over and over again with people. There was a moment when we had a really tough time in 2016 after Nico won the race and the championship, and we didn’t speak for several weeks. He came to my house because I told him, ‘We need to talk.’ We spent many hours together. That was the foundation of our friendship and relationship in the years to come. But what I told him was, ‘We can’t not talk. If something bothers you, you need to pick up the phone and tell me.’ And I promised to do the same.”
From that moment, the seven-time world champion grew even more, proving it both on and off the track.
“The rule we chose is that if something makes us angry, we talk about it before turning off the lights at night. We don’t let it carry over to the next day.
“It’s been a year or two since we had a situation where I was upset and didn’t call him. And he called me and said, ‘Remember what you told me? We need to talk.’ I said, ‘You’re absolutely right,'” Toto Wolff concluded.
