Toto Wolff highlights Peter Bonnington’s key role in Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 development
The rise of Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues to impress the entire Formula 1 paddock. Inside Mercedes, there is now a growing belief that behind the explosive emergence of the young Italian talent lies not only extraordinary natural ability, but also the daily work of Peter “Bono” Bonnington.
Following Kimi Antonelli’s victory in Miami, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff publicly emphasised the importance of the experienced British engineer in shaping the nineteen-year-old driver’s development.
Peter Bonnington remains one of the most respected and technically accomplished figures inside the Brackley-based team. Before becoming famous for his long and highly successful partnership with Lewis Hamilton, Bono had already worked alongside Michael Schumacher during the German legend’s Formula 1 comeback.
His collaboration with Lewis Hamilton later evolved into one of the most successful driver-engineer partnerships in modern Formula 1 history.
After Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, Mercedes decided to place Peter Bonnington in charge of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s technical programme during the Italian’s arrival into Formula 1.
Based on the current results, that decision appears to be paying off spectacularly.
After a rookie season that naturally included some youthful mistakes, Kimi Antonelli is now coming off three consecutive victories and has already rewritten several records related to precocity, becoming the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history.
The crucial work Peter Bonnington is doing behind the scenes
Speaking after the Miami Grand Prix, Toto Wolff explained that Peter Bonnington’s contribution extends far beyond simply communicating with the driver over team radio during race weekends.
The Austrian manager especially highlighted Bono’s ability to guide Kimi Antonelli through pressure-filled situations and help him properly manage mistakes.
“Bono learned from the greatest, from Schumacher to Hamilton, and now he is working with Kimi. He has been an excellent mentor for him, but also an authoritative figure when necessary,” Toto Wolff explained.
A particularly revealing example emerged during the Florida race itself, when Kimi Antonelli found himself dangerously close to receiving penalties for repeated track limits violations.
Toto Wolff shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story about how Peter Bonnington preferred to manage the situation directly without additional interference from the pit wall.
“There were a couple of delicate situations with track limits. I had told Bono that I would intervene on the radio during the next incident, but he stopped me and said to leave it to him. That shows how well he understands the correct way to manage a driver,” the Mercedes boss added.
Toto Wolff urges patience despite Kimi Antonelli’s early success
Despite the enormous excitement surrounding the results achieved during the opening phase of the season, Toto Wolff continues to adopt a cautious approach regarding the management of the Italian driver’s talent.
For the Mercedes executive, Kimi Antonelli’s development process cannot be artificially accelerated, especially in a category as demanding and mentally exhausting as Formula 1.
According to Toto Wolff, the trajectory of the young Italian perfectly reflects what Mercedes already expected from his performances in karting and junior categories: flashes of extraordinary talent combined with the inevitable mistakes that come with youth and learning.
For Mercedes, the key remains building the driver step by step without suffocating him under excessive expectations.
“In karting and junior formulas he was always exceptional. We saw extraordinary moments but also mistakes that were necessary as part of his learning process,” Toto Wolff explained.
What convinces Mercedes the most, however, is the mental maturity Kimi Antonelli has already shown when dealing with difficult situations and setbacks.
According to his Team Principal, the Italian driver has already developed a rare ability: understanding mistakes without becoming emotionally trapped by them.
“He is able to process what happens without carrying it with him for too long. He understands the mistake and then moves on. But all of us must continue guiding him, because this is a very long game,” Toto Wolff concluded.
The technical partnership between Peter Bonnington and Kimi Antonelli marks a significant “passing of the torch” within Mercedes, bridging the gap between the Hamilton era and the team’s future. By pairing the grid’s most experienced race engineer with its most exciting young prospect, Toto Wolff has created a high-performance environment that minimizes the typical growing pains of a rookie season. As Antonelli continues to lead the 2026 World Championship, the calm, authoritative voice of “Bono” in his ear may well be the decisive factor that transforms a talented teenager into a clinical world title contender.
Has the experience Bono gained from Schumacher and Hamilton truly fast-tracked Kimi’s development, or is the 19-year-old simply a generational talent?
