Juan Pablo Montoya believes George Russell faces a major psychological challenge after being comprehensively outperformed by Kimi Antonelli during the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver began the year seemingly positioned for his first genuine World Championship challenge, but he now finds himself 59 points behind his younger team-mate and trailing 6-2 in Grand Prix victories.
For George Russell, the situation has changed dramatically in only a matter of weeks. What appeared to be the season in which he could finally establish himself as Mercedes’ undisputed leader has instead developed into a campaign dominated by Kimi Antonelli, leaving the British driver needing to draw on all of his mental strength during the second half of the championship.
Kimi Antonelli turns George Russell’s Mercedes season upside down
George Russell spent three seasons alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes and proved himself a worthy team-mate to the seven-time World Champion. When Lewis Hamilton moved to Ferrari, George Russell effectively inherited the role of team leader, while the vacant seat was handed to Kimi Antonelli.
That made 2026 appear to be a major opportunity for George Russell. With Mercedes producing a front-running car and his inexperienced team-mate still relatively new to Formula 1, the British driver entered the campaign in a position many believed could lead to a maiden World Championship.
Instead, Kimi Antonelli has dramatically altered the picture. The Italian did not seriously threaten George Russell’s leadership during the Australian Grand Prix weekend, but from China onwards he gradually began taking control of the intra-team contest.
The result heading into the summer break is striking: Kimi Antonelli leads George Russell 6-2 in race victories and holds a 59-point advantage in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings. The difference has inevitably changed the discussion around the Mercedes hierarchy and increased the pressure on the more experienced driver.
Montoya: George Russell has a psychological mountain to climb
Juan Pablo Montoya sympathises with George Russell and believes the situation is especially difficult from a psychological perspective. The former Formula 1 driver noted that expectations before the season were almost the opposite of what has unfolded on track.
“Russell’s difficulties are quite shocking,” Juan Pablo Montoya told Betpack. “Everyone expected him to dominate the season and instead that’s not the case.”
George Russell remains mathematically involved in the championship fight, but Kimi Antonelli’s advantage means the challenge is no longer simply about finding more performance. According to Juan Pablo Montoya, the Mercedes driver must also process the fact that even performing at his own maximum has not so far been enough to beat his team-mate.
“Psychologically, he has a mountain to climb because it’s not easy at all to process the fact that even giving your best is not enough to beat your team-mate and win the title,” Juan Pablo Montoya explained. “Antonelli has surprised everyone, Russell first of all.”
Russell under pressure after entering 2026 as Mercedes leader
The contrast with the expectations surrounding George Russell before the season makes the situation particularly difficult. After Lewis Hamilton’s departure, the British driver appeared ready to take complete control of Mercedes, while Kimi Antonelli was still expected to continue his development alongside a much more experienced team-mate.
Instead, the younger Mercedes driver has accelerated that process dramatically. His rise has created questions over how George Russell’s role within the team could evolve if the gap continues, including whether George Russell risks finding himself in a position similar to Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes.
The comparison is particularly sensitive because George Russell entered the season with championship ambitions of his own. Kimi Antonelli’s emergence has not simply denied him a straightforward route to the title; it has also forced him to confront an unexpectedly strong challenge from within his own garage.
Kimi Antonelli becomes the benchmark George Russell must beat
Juan Pablo Montoya’s assessment underlines how quickly Formula 1’s competitive picture can change. George Russell began the season as the established Mercedes driver and the natural reference point for his younger team-mate. By the summer break, Kimi Antonelli has become the driver setting the benchmark.
There is still time for George Russell to respond during the second half of the championship, but the task involves more than simply reducing a points deficit. He must rediscover the momentum that made him Mercedes’ leading figure after Lewis Hamilton’s departure while finding a way to outperform a team-mate who has already exceeded expectations.
For Juan Pablo Montoya, that is what makes the challenge so demanding. Kimi Antonelli has surprised the Formula 1 paddock with the speed of his rise, but perhaps nobody has felt the impact more directly than George Russell.
