Toto Wolff does not expect Andrea Kimi Antonelli to fight for an Italian Grand Prix podium from the back of the Monza grid, with Mercedes unwilling to take excessive strategic risks simply to produce a spectacular comeback. The championship leader instead faces a recovery drive focused primarily on limiting the points he loses to his closest rivals.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli heads into his home Grand Prix leading the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship but will start from the back after his Mercedes exceeded its permitted allocation of power unit components. The Italian therefore faces a very different race from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who are both 59 points behind him in the 2026 Formula 1 standings.
Toto Wolff plays down Kimi Antonelli podium chances at Monza
With Andrea Kimi Antonelli forced into a recovery drive, his priority will be to minimise the damage relative to his direct championship challengers. George Russell starts from the front row, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton will also begin the race much further ahead of the Mercedes championship leader.
From the back of the grid, Andrea Kimi Antonelli will therefore have reason to hope Pierre Gasly, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen can take points away from the drivers pursuing him in the championship.
Mercedes has already approached the weekend with the wider title picture in mind. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s grid penalty was known before qualifying, allowing the team to use him to support George Russell’s attempt to secure the strongest possible starting position.
Mercedes will not chase a spectacular result with excessive strategy risk
Toto Wolff believes asking Andrea Kimi Antonelli to recover all the way to the podium would be unrealistic unless Mercedes adopted a significantly different strategy and accepted considerably more risk.
“Antonelli on the podium? I think that’s asking too much,” Toto Wolff told Sky. “Once you’ve passed the group of slower drivers, it’s not easy to continue the comeback. The performance around this track is very close and I don’t think it’s possible to get onto the podium unless we adopt a very different strategy and take a few risks.”
That means Mercedes is unlikely to gamble purely in pursuit of an eye-catching result. Andrea Kimi Antonelli has previously said he is targeting a strong recovery from the back at Monza, but the team’s approach is shaped by the fact that he remains the championship leader rather than a driver with nothing to lose.
The Italian’s task is also complicated by how closely matched the field has been at Monza. Once he clears the slower cars, making further progress into the points and towards the leading group is expected to become increasingly difficult.
Antonelli’s priority is limiting the championship damage
With George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both 59 points behind, the Italian Grand Prix represents an important opportunity for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rivals to reduce his advantage. Mercedes therefore has little incentive to expose its championship leader to unnecessary strategic risk when a measured recovery could still produce valuable points.
For Toto Wolff, a podium would require too many variables to fall into place. The more realistic objective is for Andrea Kimi Antonelli to work his way through the field, maximise the opportunities available and surrender as few points as possible before the championship moves on from Monza.
