Toto Wolff is reportedly planning to sell part of his stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team — a deal that could be worth hundreds of millions. The Mercedes F1 outfit’s value continues to soar, with Wolff set to sell 5% of his shares and the Brackley-based team now valued at record levels. It’s no secret that Formula 1 is currently experiencing one of the most profitable eras in its history. Financially, teams are stronger than ever, with a long list of investors and partners eager to join the grid, driving their market values to unprecedented levels.
It is truly a new golden age for Formula 1. While on-track action may still divide traditional fans nostalgic for the sport’s past, the financial health of the championship has never been stronger. Since Liberty Media took control, F1’s growth has been unstoppable. Social media engagement continues to break records, a younger audience ensures long-term prospects, and sponsors are competing fiercely for space on the cars.
Even the much-debated Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was initially met with skepticism from fans, has turned into an extraordinary success. With box office earnings exceeding half a billion euros, it has become the most profitable sports film in history and the biggest hit of the American actor’s career.
Toto Wolff wants to sell: how much is Mercedes worth?
The news first broke via Sportico before being confirmed by BBC Sport. According to reports, Toto Wolff — Mercedes Formula 1 team principal and CEO — intends to sell 5% of his shares to a new investor. This new partner would join INEOS and Mercedes-Benz, both of which currently own 33% of the team.
The valuation of the Brackley-based outfit has skyrocketed. Estimates suggest the team is now worth around 6 billion dollars. That means selling a 5% stake would bring Toto Wolff a personal gain of approximately 300 million dollars, marking yet another major milestone in the business success of the Mercedes team boss.
