Toto Wolff explains why he calls Andrea Kimi Antonelli by three different names. Toto Wolff reveals the playful way he addresses Andrea Kimi Antonelli based on performance.

Kimi Antonelli and Toto Wolff, 2024 F1

Andrea, Kimi or simply Antonelli? A curious anecdote reveals an interesting detail about the relationship between Toto Wolff and young Italian racing talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Formula 1.

The bond between Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team Principal Toto Wolff and the Bologna-born driver, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, goes beyond a standard team-academy relationship. Their collaboration began back in 2018, when Kimi Antonelli was still very young and was officially welcomed into the Mercedes Junior Team. Since then, the connection between the two has grown steadily, culminating in a breakthrough moment with a podium finish at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix. However, the third-place result is only a starting point. The real goal for both Antonelli and the Brackley-based team is to consistently fight for victories and eventually world titles.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli entered Formula 1 as one of the most anticipated rookies of the modern era, carrying with him the weight of significant expectations. After a few low-key performances in the opening races of the season, some critics had already begun to question his future with Mercedes. But the podium at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal silenced many doubters. That third-place finish was seen almost as a victory, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding the Mercedes team in the current competitive climate. With the constant rumors about Max Verstappen potentially joining the German team, it is clear that changes might be on the horizon—and someone could be forced to give up their seat.

Outside of Italy, particularly in the United Kingdom, speculation has intensified. Many believe that if Max Verstappen does sign with Mercedes, it will likely be Andrea Kimi Antonelli who makes way, while George Russell is expected to be retained thanks to his consistency and performance. Ultimately, it will be up to Toto Wolff to decide whether to continue betting on a driver who was born and raised within the Silver Arrows academy, or to take a bold gamble with an all-star driver line-up.

As mentioned, the Canadian Grand Prix podium came as a welcome boost for the young Italian driver. However, in an interview with journalist Daniele Sparisci for Corriere della Sera, Andrea Kimi Antonelli admitted to feeling somewhat disappointed: “We had a car that was capable of winning, and my teammate proved it.” Starting from fourth on the grid, a stronger qualifying session might have opened the door to an even better result for him.

While questions about his future continue to swirl, a light-hearted story offers a glimpse into the dynamics of his relationship with Toto Wolff. Antonelli explained: “What does Toto call me? Well, it depends: when I’m doing well, he calls me Kimi. When I’m doing average, it’s Andrea. And when I’m doing terribly, it’s just Antonelli.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 Formula 1 season, uncertainty remains over whether Andrea Kimi Antonelli will retain his seat. However, regardless of what happens, it seems unlikely that Mercedes would fully cut ties with one of their most promising young prospects. A temporary benching or a loan move to another team, such as Alpine, appears to be the more probable scenario. Indeed, whispers within the paddock already suggest that such an option is being actively considered.
