F1 | Rumors from the Netherlands: Could a Spa Press Conference Reveal Max Verstappen’s Move to Mercedes?
The tension continues to rise inside the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, as speculation intensifies over the future of reigning World Champion Max Verstappen. Despite Red Bull’s attempts to restore internal stability—including retaining Christian Horner at the helm—fresh rumors have emerged suggesting that the Dutch driver could be preparing to switch teams. The latest buzz: a potential press conference at Spa-Francorchamps during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, where Verstappen’s move to Mercedes could be officially announced.
The summer break in Formula 1 is heating up with intense speculation coming from the Netherlands. Reports suggest that Max Verstappen, a four-time Formula 1 World Champion who has grown increasingly dissatisfied with the technical direction of Red Bull Racing’s operations in Milton Keynes, may be ready to embrace a new chapter in his career.
However, several critical factors remain unresolved—such as the fate of Mercedes’ young prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the contractual position of current Mercedes driver George Russell, and the direction that new CEO and Team Principal Laurent Mekies will take the team in the near future.
This rumored transfer continues to dominate headlines across the Formula 1 paddock. For some observers, an official announcement is only a matter of days away. Others remain skeptical and believe that no real change is imminent. What is certain, however, is that Max Verstappen and Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff have held discussions—and continue to do so.
The possibility of a deal being reached cannot be dismissed, particularly given the recent challenges faced by Red Bull Racing on the track. Verstappen is laser-focused on winning and wants to do so again as soon as the 2026 regulations come into effect.
The Dutch driver’s potential departure from Red Bull appears to stem from multiple factors, though the primary concerns center around the technical leadership of the team. According to Nelson Valkenburg, a respected Formula 1 commentator for Dutch television, who spoke on the “Nailing the Apex” podcast, Verstappen has reportedly grown disillusioned with Pierre Waché, Red Bull’s Technical Director. Additionally, he has serious doubts about the competitiveness of the future Red Bull Powertrains engine, currently in development through a technical partnership with Ford, which is set to power the team from 2026 onwards.
Max Verstappen edging ever closer to Mercedes
“Red Bull is in a very difficult position right now,” said Nelson Valkenburg during the podcast. “They are bound by a contract and cannot simply renegotiate it. The only thing the team can do to retain Max Verstappen is to prove that they are capable of building a car that can win a championship next season. And this is exactly where doubts begin to arise.”
Valkenburg continued, “Over the past few seasons, race by race, Verstappen seems to have lost faith in the technical side of the Red Bull team. This isn’t about the race crew or the engineers working trackside to maximize the car’s potential—it’s about the people designing and building the car. There are major doubts surrounding the engine program, and equally strong concerns about the leadership of Pierre Waché. Right now, Red Bull has nothing it can show or say to Verstappen that would significantly alter this narrative.”
According to Valkenburg, the connection between Max Verstappen and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team is becoming increasingly tangible. “The two sides are getting closer and closer,” he said. “We’ve heard rumors suggesting that we should brace ourselves for some kind of official media event at Spa-Francorchamps. Nothing is confirmed yet. It’s one of those whispers where we just have to wait and see. There are many people within the Formula 1 world—and even within Verstappen’s inner circle—who are hoping for this change to happen. Sometimes change can be a good thing.”
