Young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli has already made it onto the podium once in his debut Formula 1 season, but it’s not been without growing pains. Team Principal Toto Wolff, however, stands firmly behind the rookie, encouraging his aggressive style and accepting the mistakes that come with it as part of his development.
Antonelli Still Learning After Red Bull Ring Incident
Unlike Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, or George Russell—who each began their Formula 1 careers with lower-tier teams like Toro Rosso, Alfa Romeo (formerly Sauber), and Williams—Andrea Kimi Antonelli was thrown straight into the deep end. The 18-year-old made his debut directly with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a squad that consistently fights for podiums and victories.
Following the departure of seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, the Brackley-based outfit handed one of its two seats to the Bologna-born talent. Although the role of team leader remains firmly with George Russell, Antonelli has the rare privilege of gaining his first F1 experience in one of the most competitive teams on the grid—albeit with less pressure to deliver immediate results.
Earlier this season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered a historic performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, securing a remarkable third-place finish. It marked the first Formula 1 podium for an Italian driver in 16 years, breaking a long drought that dated back to Giancarlo Fisichella’s era. However, his next race in Austria at the Red Bull Ring ended abruptly. His Grand Prix lasted only a few hundred meters after he locked the rear tyres under braking at Turn 3 and, while trying to avoid other drivers, collided directly with Max Verstappen. As a result of that incident, Antonelli received a three-place grid penalty for the British Grand Prix, where he will start from tenth position.
Toto Wolff: “I Like That He Pushes the Limits”
Despite these errors, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff remains extremely supportive of the young driver’s development curve. He pointed out that mistakes are a natural and necessary part of a rookie’s progression, and that Antonelli’s aggressive nature is actually a positive indicator.
“I’m absolutely fine with him taking risks and exploring the limits,” said Toto Wolff in an interview with La Stampa. “Mistakes are simply part of the learning process. In Monza, for example, it cost us a bit to recover the car after he went off at the Parabolica during Free Practice 1. But I’d rather have to rein in a thoroughbred than push a donkey.”
According to Wolff, the key ingredients for success in Formula 1 are raw speed and intelligence—qualities he believes Antonelli possesses. “If you have speed and the mental sharpness to learn from situations, the results will come.”
When asked whether Kimi Antonelli has the potential to become a Formula 1 World Champion, Toto Wolff replied confidently: “That’s how we see his future. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have put him in a Mercedes F1 car. Kimi has all the necessary qualities, but we must manage expectations—especially in Italy, where you’ve already started calling him a legend.”
