Austin will be a leap into the unknown for Mercedes, but there’s confidence: “Russell’s win was no coincidence”
The race week leading to the United States Grand Prix in Texas has officially begun, marking one of the most anticipated events of the season. The Circuit of the Americas will host the fourth Sprint weekend of the year, adding an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to an already packed calendar. As teams prepare for the trip to Austin, many are taking the opportunity to regroup, refine their strategies, and evaluate what role they might play in the upcoming round.
Wolff: “The COTA is a real test, we’re heading into the unknown”
Inside Mercedes, the mood is one of quiet optimism following the recent run of strong results in the final third of the championship. George Russell’s victory in Singapore, combined with a solid performance and recovery from Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has put the Brackley-based squad in a strong position. Team principal Toto Wolff stated that these performances were “not just a matter of luck.” According to the Austrian, George Russell’s win and Antonelli’s fifth place were unexpected, but the team showed a competitive level of performance throughout the entire weekend — on both Saturday and Sunday — sending a clear warning to rivals such as McLaren and Red Bull.
Wolff added that the team’s form had also been promising in Azerbaijan, which increases their anticipation for what lies ahead in the American rounds. “We performed really well in Baku too,” he noted, “which makes us eager to see what we can achieve in the upcoming races across the Americas. These will bring very different challenges compared to the ones we have faced recently. We’re heading into the unknown.”
He went on to say that it is precisely this unpredictability that keeps Formula 1 so exciting. “The Circuit of the Americas, with its dramatic elevation changes, the spectacular Turn 1, the sequence of high-speed corners, and its slower technical sections, is a true test of a car’s balance and adaptability. It’s one of the most iconic venues on the calendar,” Wolff explained. “To make things even more interesting, it’s also the fourth Sprint weekend of the season, which means there will be added risks but also more opportunities. Our focus will be on putting the W16 in a position to fight for strong results right from the start of the weekend.”
Mercedes celebrate a Safety Car milestone
The Austin round will also carry special meaning for Mercedes, as the team will mark a major milestone. The Mercedes-AMG Safety Car, a symbol of the brand’s commitment to excellence and technical innovation in motorsport, will make its 500th Grand Prix appearance. Wolff expressed his pride in reaching such an achievement: “In Texas, our Mercedes-AMG Safety Car will celebrate its 500th race. This milestone is a testament to our company’s dedication to reaching the highest level of motorsport, to its longevity, technical innovation, and the beauty of our cars.”
With confidence high and the team’s momentum growing, Mercedes approach Austin looking to confirm that recent results were not just isolated moments of brilliance but signs of a genuine return to competitiveness as the 2025 Formula 1 season moves into its decisive phase.
