Toto Wolff defends George Russell against Kimi Antonelli and backs him for 2027 F1 title

Toto Wolff, George Russell 2024

Toto Wolff has defended George Russell amid his difficult 2026 Formula 1 season against Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, insisting that the British driver is not genuinely three or five tenths slower than the Italian. The Mercedes team principal has taken responsibility for Russell’s performance problems, pointing to the difficulties of keeping the car within its ideal operating window while maintaining that the Briton has the ability to fight for the world championship in 2027.

Despite driving a Mercedes finally capable of challenging for the world title, George Russell has been comprehensively outperformed by the remarkable talent of Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The British driver has struggled to match his younger teammate, who holds a 123-point advantage in the drivers’ standings and leads their head-to-head battle by nine victories to three, as well as seven pole positions to five.

George Russell’s struggles against Kimi Antonelli expose Mercedes performance gap

The difference between the two Mercedes drivers has been evident throughout the campaign, but it was particularly striking at the recent United States Grand Prix in Austin. George Russell crossed the finish line 54 seconds behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli, underlining the scale of the gap between them on a weekend when the Italian once again demonstrated his superiority.

That result added to an increasingly difficult season for Russell, who remains second in the world championship despite the significant deficit to his teammate. His problems at Austin were also reflected in his own assessment of 50 difficult laps at the United States Grand Prix, while Antonelli strengthened his position in the championship with another victory.

Toto Wolff takes responsibility for George Russell’s Mercedes difficulties

Despite the evident decline in George Russell’s relative performance, Mercedes team principal and co-owner Toto Wolff has strongly defended the British driver. Rather than attributing the results entirely to Russell, the Austrian believes the team’s difficulties in finding the correct operating window for the car have played a decisive role.

“George has struggled enormously, and I think that’s because getting the car into the right operating window is really difficult,” Toto Wolff explained.

The Mercedes boss made it clear that George Russell appears to be particularly sensitive to the car moving outside that window, more so than Andrea Kimi Antonelli. However, he insisted that the team must work alongside the British driver to understand the underlying causes of the performance difference, rather than accepting that the gap simply reflects their respective driving abilities.

“When the car goes outside that window, he struggles, even more than Kimi. And that’s our responsibility. We need to understand together with him why there is such a difference in performance, because George is not half a second or even three tenths slower than Kimi. That’s absolutely not the case.”

Wolff’s assessment places considerable responsibility on Mercedes to identify why the two drivers are experiencing such different levels of performance with the same machinery. The issue has become particularly significant as Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues to strengthen his Formula 1 championship challenge, leaving Russell facing an increasingly difficult task in the closing stages of the season.

Toto Wolff believes George Russell can fight for the 2027 F1 championship

Beyond the technical difficulties, Toto Wolff also acknowledged the psychological challenge George Russell may be facing. The British driver entered a season in which Mercedes finally possessed championship-winning machinery, only to find himself competing against an exceptionally talented young teammate who has steadily established a significant advantage.

“Perhaps it’s difficult to deal with a situation where you feel it’s your year, and then you have a wonderkid on the other side who starts gaining ground on you. But if we give George a fast car next season, he has everything it takes to win the championship,” Toto Wolff said confidently.

The Mercedes team principal therefore remains convinced that George Russell possesses the ability required to become a Formula 1 world champion, despite the difficulties he has experienced against Andrea Kimi Antonelli in 2026. For Mercedes, the challenge is not simply to maintain its competitiveness but also to help Russell recover the performance needed to challenge his teammate on equal terms.
