Mercedes, a dominant weekend
At the start of the weekend, he had joked about how strong the Mercedes cars were, especially on a dirty and dusty track, but after Saturday’s pole position, he had tempered expectations, preparing for a battle of millimeters against the two Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. In other words, between some pre-race tactics and a bit of good old superstition, it seems that even Toto Wolff didn’t expect such a dominant performance from the two W15 cars in Las Vegas. The term “dominance” is not casual, because while George Russell led the race uncontested – or almost, given the early battle with Charles Leclerc – the true supremacy of the Silver Arrows was more than evident in Lewis Hamilton’s furious comeback from 10th to 2nd position.
Toto Wolff comments on the Las Vegas GP
“It’s been a while since we had a double win,” said the team principal after the race, “so this is a fantastic result for the team. The colder conditions on a low-grip circuit like this clearly played in our favor. Nonetheless, everyone did an excellent job to execute everything well throughout the weekend. We were fast from the start of FP1 on Thursday, and we continued that pace on Friday and Saturday. We got the car into its operating window exceptionally well, and it was truly satisfying.”
After the chequered flag of the Las Vegas GP, Toto Wolff also praised the individual performances of the drivers: “George managed the race excellently by keeping Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari at bay in the early stages and then taking control of the Grand Prix from there. Lewis also drove fantastically, moving from 10th to 2nd position. He showed how fast he is by bringing home an excellent result for the team. Finally, I also congratulate Max Verstappen on winning the title. He’s a deserving champion, and we hope to be able to fight him next year.”
