Mercedes has been facing an issue related to temperatures that prevents its drivers from feeling completely comfortable with the car. Although the Brackley team is currently third in the constructors’ standings, the gap to the championship leaders (McLaren) is still very large — after the Spanish Grand Prix, the deficit stands at 203 points — and at the moment seems irrecoverable. In an interview, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described a difficult situation to improve but also looked at the bright side.
A fact
Reflecting on the situation, Toto Wolff described the drivers as needing “the planets to align,” stating that the current situation Mercedes finds itself in is simply a “fact.”
“I’ll try to explain the situation very simply: at the moment we’re still very fast in the cold but slow in the heat — exactly the same problem we had last season,” Toto Wolff told the media after the Spanish Grand Prix.
“The drivers need to feel confident with the car, and right now it’s clear they don’t. It really takes a planetary alignment to be up front in qualifying.”
“It’s not so much about being surprised or disappointed because it’s a fact. We are facing a situation we’d like to solve on our own. I believe we had a much better start to the season than last year, so maybe that’s the positive side from which to look at things.”
