Toto Wolff believes Kimi Antonelli achieved something extraordinary with Mercedes W17

Kimi Antonelli and Toto Wolff, 2026 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s victory at the United States Grand Prix has provided Mercedes with encouraging evidence that its latest W17 upgrades are beginning to deliver the expected performance. However, Toto Wolff believes the Italian driver played an even greater role in the Austin success, suggesting that he managed to extract more from the car than its current potential would normally allow.

The aerodynamic package introduced at Sepang is starting to produce positive results, particularly in high-speed corners where additional downforce is essential. Nevertheless, Mercedes has yet to resolve all the weaknesses associated with the developments, and the W17 continues to operate within a narrow performance window. For Toto Wolff, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s outstanding display at the Circuit of The Americas demonstrated how much difference the driver can make.

Toto Wolff believes Kimi Antonelli exceeded the Mercedes W17’s potential

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has set remarkably high standards this season. His victory in Austin last weekend was celebrated as another major step towards securing the Formula 1 World Championship, which is now within reach and could potentially be clinched at the Mexican Grand Prix. However, the triumph in Texas may prove to be the defining achievement of his campaign.

Toto Wolff was delighted by the unexpected pole position secured by the Bologna-born driver on Saturday and even more encouraged when Andrea Kimi Antonelli converted that performance into victory the following day. The Mercedes team principal did not hesitate to describe the Austin success as the Italian’s finest race so far, underlining the significance of his latest victory in the championship battle.

“As far as Kimi is concerned, obviously the main point is that, in my opinion, he drove his best race so far. He managed to start on a less competitive tyre and then control the situation at every stage of the race,” Toto Wolff explained.

One reason behind such high praise is the fact that the Mercedes W17 is still far from perfect. The upgrade package introduced at Sepang has been subjected to extensive analysis after causing several difficulties on track, forcing Mercedes to reconsider how best to exploit the aerodynamic improvements.

The Brackley-based team now appears to have identified a more promising direction, although several details still need to be refined. According to Toto Wolff, Andrea Kimi Antonelli was able to take the W17 beyond its current limitations, delivering a performance that exceeded what the car itself appeared capable of producing.

“For the rest, the champion — who isn’t a champion yet, but who has demonstrated exceptional qualities — did something extraordinary. So I believe he performed above the potential of the car. Perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I think his driving style suits the car perfectly. We also saw that in qualifying, when he could have gained another one or even two and a half tenths on his final lap.”

Mercedes W17 upgrades deliver downforce gains but remain difficult to optimise

Mercedes appears to have made meaningful progress in understanding the aerodynamic package introduced in Malaysia. The additional downforce sought by the engineers is now present, with the benefits particularly visible through high-speed corners. However, the revised W17 remains less convincing in slower sections, where the team has yet to achieve the desired balance.

Another major challenge is the narrow operating window required to extract the maximum performance from the new components. Mercedes must therefore continue refining its setup approach to make the aerodynamic gains more consistently accessible, rather than relying on particularly favourable conditions or exceptional driving performances.

“I think the upgrade we’ve introduced on the car is difficult to exploit. Once we’ve analysed everything, we’ll try to retrace every decision we’ve made and correlate it with the lack of performance on Friday and the relatively better performance on Saturday and Sunday. The positive news, at least, is that the car works. Now it’s about widening the operating window,” Toto Wolff explained.

The Austrian manager then compared the latest developments with an earlier Mercedes upgrade that had delivered more immediate and predictable improvements. In particular, he highlighted the package introduced in Montreal, which had produced the expected results without the same difficulties in extracting its performance.

“I think a successful upgrade is the one we introduced in Montreal: you put it on the car, the driver tells you it works, and you can immediately feel the effects. The upgrade delivers the expected results in the area where development was focused, whether that’s high-speed or low-speed corners. This upgrade, on the other hand, didn’t work initially.”

The difficulties encountered with the latest package help explain why Mercedes struggled to find a satisfactory setup during the early stages of the Austin weekend. Despite those problems, Andrea Kimi Antonelli ultimately secured pole position and victory, while the team’s work to understand the revised aerodynamic characteristics continued. The contrast between the two Mercedes drivers was also significant, with George Russell enduring a particularly difficult race.

Mercedes development direction could influence the 2027 W18

Although the setup difficulties have caused considerable frustration for both the drivers and the team, finding a more effective development direction represents encouraging news for the future. The current aerodynamic foundation of the W17 is expected to provide the basis for the W18, Mercedes’ Formula 1 car for the 2027 season.

That makes understanding the limitations of the Sepang upgrades especially important. The engineers have identified the additional downforce generated by the new components, but they must now address the weaknesses preventing the car from consistently exploiting that performance. The work undertaken over the closing stages of 2026 could therefore prove valuable beyond the current championship campaign.

“I think, at the moment, we’re following the same approach with the upgrade. Our data tells us that the car has the necessary downforce and also shows us where the weaknesses are. After all, this has been the direction we’ve followed in development over the last three and a half months. So we’ll continue along this path, trying to correct the elements that aren’t working as they should,” Toto Wolff concluded.

Mercedes consequently has two encouraging developments to take away from Austin: the W17 upgrades are beginning to demonstrate their aerodynamic potential, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli has shown that he can deliver exceptional results even when the car remains difficult to optimise. With the championship potentially approaching its conclusion in Mexico, the team must now continue improving the operating window of its latest package while building on the progress achieved in Texas.
