The Mercedes boss is expressing views that are increasingly aligned with the position outlined by the CEO of Formula 1
The new rules in action
The Formula 1 season resumes in Miami after a break of over a month caused by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. All attention is focused on the technical regulation changes agreed by the FIA, Formula 1, and the teams during this forced pause, as well as on whether these adjustments will help reduce the criticism coming from fans regarding this new generation of single-seaters.
Speaking ahead of the Florida round, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also addressed these “direction corrections”, although he appears increasingly aligned with the positions expressed by Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, a strong advocate for the current generation of cars and their entertainment value.
“As a sport, we have used this period to initiate a constructive and open dialogue with all stakeholders. The regulation changes represent an evolution rather than a revolution,” Wolff explained, “and they have been designed to improve the quality of the races we have seen so far, while still allowing drivers to push to the limit. These changes respect the DNA of our sport, and I am confident they will help make the show even more exciting in the future.”
Regardless of the regulations, however, for the Austrian manager the only real objective remains maintaining the technical supremacy that Mercedes has shown in the first three Grands Prix of the season.
“We used this break to objectively analyse the opening races, address our weaknesses and continue improving our performance level,” Toto Wolff added. “We started the season well, but that means very little if you stop there. We also know our competitors will have used this time effectively to improve their packages and gain a deeper understanding of their cars, so we expect the field in Miami to be much closer. That is the reality of Formula 1; it is a challenge that we not only welcome, but also one we must respond to,” Toto Wolff concluded.
In summary, Toto Wolff has voiced strong support for the recent F1 regulatory adjustments, framing them as an essential evolution to enhance racing quality alongside CEO Stefano Domenicali. While the sport introduces these mid-season “course corrections” in Miami, Mercedes remains focused on objective self-analysis and technical refinement to defend its early-season dominance against a closing field. This unified front between team leadership and the sport’s executives highlights a strategic commitment to maintaining the current 2026 technical trajectory while prioritizing the overall spectacle for fans.
