Toto Wolff’s Care for Lewis Hamilton
The events of Abu Dhabi 2021 left a deep impact on Hamilton’s career, marking a pivotal shift. Since then, Hamilton’s journey with Mercedes has experienced its ups and downs, culminating in what’s set to be his final race with the team at Yas Marina on December 8, ahead of his highly anticipated debut with Ferrari.
Yes, Ferrari. Many doubted whether Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, could still deliver at the highest levels. Critics voiced skepticism about his transition, only to be proved wrong at the British GP in Silverstone. Lewis Hamilton himself also wrestled with self-doubt over these years, a struggle Toto Wolff was well aware of, as he worked to continually remind Lewis Hamilton of his extraordinary talent.
Toto Wolff’s Own Words
Wolff recently opened up about their relationship, which has endured despite Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Scuderia Ferrari. “I still see him exactly the same way I did five years ago,” Wolff shared. “When you’re not winning for a long time, you start doubting yourself. My role has been to counter that doubt by reinforcing to him that he is the greatest driver the world has ever seen. And why shouldn’t that be true? The car just hasn’t been good enough,” he explained in a conversation on the High Performance podcast.
Reflecting on the dramatic close to the 2021 season—particularly the controversial final race decision by Michael Masi that cost Lewis Hamilton his eighth world title—Wolff acknowledged the intense battles with Red Bull leading up to it. “Lewis takes adversity and channels it into his driving,” Toto Wolff noted. “That was the moment he felt, ‘Everyone is against me; nobody wants me to win this championship.’ He embraced the challenge, declaring, ‘Rock ‘n roll.’ His performance was simply on another level. Max is an extraordinary driver, and he’s shown that in the years since. But in those final five or six races, Lewis was in a league of his own, particularly at Abu Dhabi, where he had everything under control.” – the Mercedes team principal concluded.
