George Russell’s comment…
At the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona on June 1st, one of the most talked-about moments was the late-race collision between Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and George Russell’s Mercedes. Max Verstappen was supposed to yield position to his rival but hit him without clear reason, receiving a 10-second penalty that dropped him to tenth place and added 3 penalty points to his license.
In post-race interviews, George Russell said he had never seen a move like that before, adding an indirect jab: “Maybe I only saw something like that in Formula E, maybe from a British Formula E driver.” The clear target of this provocation was Dan Ticktum, who in the past has been known for aggressive moves beyond the rules, such as the intentional Safety Car collision in 2023.
…Dan Ticktum’s revenge
The day after, Dan Ticktum responded to The Mirror: “As soon as I read it, I thought, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ I thought it was unnecessary. I don’t know his reasons, but we’re very different personalities. He’s perfect for Mercedes, always says the right things, the typical good guy. I’m the opposite. But I respect his career and what he’s done.” – he pointed out.
However, after his notable victory – his first in three and a half years of Formula E – with Cupra in Jakarta, Dan Ticktum, provoked by journalists, was far less polite toward George Russell and answered more sharply: “It feels great to prove some ignorant and stupid people wrong,” again without naming his compatriot directly.
Dan Ticktum concluded: “He didn’t say my name, but it’s pretty obvious he meant me. Thanks for the free publicity. Comparing me to Max Verstappen is a compliment, thanks.”
