Martin Brundle has shared his thoughts on the unexpected dismissal of Christian Horner, discussing the possibility that Max Verstappen might be connected to the decision. Following the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Red Bull surprised many with the timing of an announcement that shocked the Formula 1 community: the firing of Christian Horner. After dedicating twenty years to Red Bull, Horner had to say goodbye not only to the team employees and drivers but also to Jos Verstappen, the father of the current World Champion Max Verstappen, with whom Horner had a difficult relationship over the years.
For the former Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen, this dismissal was not too painful given the disagreements and tensions that had occurred in recent seasons. Due to these incidents and conflicts between Horner and Jos Verstappen, speculation arose that Max Verstappen’s inner circle might have played a role behind the scenes in Horner’s departure from Red Bull.
Martin Brundle addressed this theory, emphasizing that even if it were true, it would not be the sole reason for Red Bull’s decision to let Horner go. Martin Brundle explained, “Christian Horner wanted full control over what he believed he had built and aimed to protect the team’s interests as best as possible within a rapidly evolving and highly specialized company. My suspicion is that he may have overreached, and once the support from the Yoovidhya family, who hold 51% ownership, diminished within the bigger picture, Red Bull’s headquarters in Austria dismissed Christian at the earliest opportunity.”
Martin Brundle added, “Considering other events that unfolded after last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix, especially involving Max’s father Jos Verstappen, who is known to be extraordinarily influential and vocal, the situation was already compromised.” However, Martin Brundle clarified that the decision to remove the now former Team Principal was not directly made by Max Verstappen himself. He believes, nonetheless, that Max Verstappen’s entourage did not oppose the idea of replacing Horner.
