George Russell offered a detailed look into what made Mercedes unexpectedly dominant under the lights of Marina Bay. The British driver secured his second win of the 2025 Formula 1 season after his earlier triumph in Canada, leading a race that saw the Silver Arrows emerge as the fastest car on track in Singapore. According to Russell, even the team itself hadn’t anticipated such a strong showing at a circuit traditionally difficult for Mercedes in recent years.
After their impressive result in Azerbaijan, where the Brackley-based team finished second and fourth, Mercedes continued its momentum with another convincing display. Despite lower expectations coming into the Singapore weekend, a key factor related to tyre performance proved decisive. Thanks to optimal management of the Pirelli compounds, the team was able to control the race tempo and maintain strong pace from start to finish, ultimately converting it into a victory.
Tyre management made the difference
Speaking after the race, George Russell highlighted how tyre behavior was the cornerstone of Mercedes’ success. “This year there’s been much less tyre overheating compared to previous seasons,” he explained. “I think Singapore used to be a circuit where we suffered a lot from overheating, but now with some corners resurfaced and smoother tarmac, it’s become a bit easier to manage.”
The opening phase of the race was particularly challenging for the British driver. “When I saw Max on the Soft tyres, I knew I just had to stay ahead of him into Turn 1,” said Russell. “The first few laps were really intense, and I’m aware that Max was probably managing the soft compound better than I was handling the mediums. Building a 10-second gap in around 20 laps felt amazing. From that point onward, it was just about bringing the car home safely and staying clear of the wall at Turn 10.”
Mercedes’ strong tyre performance was the result of a combination of factors: improved car balance, effective cooling, and a race strategy perfectly adapted to the low-degradation conditions at Marina Bay. The W16 handled its tyres more gently than its main rivals, allowing Russell to maintain consistent lap times even in the demanding humidity of Singapore.
The win underlines Mercedes’ growing competitiveness as the 2025 season progresses, suggesting that the team has finally found stability after a challenging start to the year. With Russell now emerging as a consistent front-runner and Lewis Hamilton also showing improved form in recent races, the German team seems to have regained confidence and direction.
As the championship moves on to Austin, Mercedes will aim to capitalize on this momentum. For Russell, Singapore was not only a personal success but also a technical confirmation that the team’s recent updates and refined tyre understanding are beginning to pay off. “It was a race where everything came together — tyres, pace, and precision,” he said. “These are the weekends that show what we’re capable of when we get everything right.”
