Yesterday, Oliver Bearman was penalised
Oliver Bearman received a ten-place grid penalty for overtaking Carlos Sainz during FP2 under red flag conditions.
Now, the one at serious risk is the Spaniard himself, who overtook Franco Colapinto during FP2 on the run up to Massenet.
The incident was brought to the stewards’ attention only the following day, and they cleared Carlos Sainz because he had very little room for manoeuvre: when the red flag was shown, the distance between the two cars was only 42 metres. Even judging by the onboard footage, the situation was extremely borderline, and as the stewards emphasised, “Sainz was travelling at high speed – over 250 km/h – and as soon as the red flag was displayed, he slowed down safely as required by Article 2.5.4.1 b) of Appendix H of the Sporting Code. There was a significant speed difference between the two cars, and therefore the overtake was unavoidable.”
For similar circumstances, Franco Colapinto himself was also cleared after overtaking Lance Stroll under red flag conditions in FP3.
