Kimi Antonelli arrives at Monza as the Formula 1 World Championship leader, having won six of the first 12 Grands Prix of the 2026 season. The Mercedes driver’s extraordinary rise has transformed him into one of the biggest sporting stories in Italy, with Stefano Domenicali describing Antonelli’s success as a huge boost for the country, both emotionally and economically.
Twelve months ago, such a scenario would have appeared almost unimaginable. Kimi Antonelli was going through a particularly difficult period of his young career, but he now heads into his home Italian Grand Prix at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and with half of this season’s races already won.
Kimi Antonelli mania reaches Monza as F1 title dream grows
Antonelli arrives at Monza with a 59-point advantage over his closest challengers and six victories from 12 Grands Prix, exactly half of the races held so far. The Mercedes driver therefore reaches the Temple of Speed as Formula 1’s new Italian phenomenon, a dramatic transformation compared with his position only a year ago.
The ingredients are all there for Italy to dream of returning to the top of Formula 1 for the first time in 73 years. Alberto Ascari remains the most recent Italian driver to win the World Championship, having claimed his second title in 1953.
Antonelli’s rise has inevitably increased the excitement surrounding his home Grand Prix. Monza has been sold out for months, a situation fuelled not only by the explosion of interest around the young Mercedes driver but also by Ferrari being considerably more competitive than it was in 2025.
The scale of the occasion has already attracted praise from Formula 1 legends, with Jackie Stewart highlighting Kimi Antonelli’s speed and maturity ahead of Monza as the Italian prepares for one of the most significant weekends of his career.
Stefano Domenicali says Antonelli is giving Italy an extraordinary boost
According to Stefano Domenicali, Antonelli-mania has become a huge gift for Italian motorsport and is producing effects that extend well beyond Formula 1 itself.
“It’s a beautiful story that gives our country an incredible boost, economically as well,” Stefano Domenicali told Corriere della Sera. “As an Italian, proud to be one even though I operate in a global environment, I can only be happy to see something like this. Kimi, so young and fresh, so natural, also has an extraordinary romantic element to him.”
Antonelli’s age, personality and rapid rise have helped create a particularly powerful story for Italian fans. His emergence as a genuine championship contender has brought the prospect of an Italian Formula 1 world champion back into focus more than seven decades after Alberto Ascari’s success.
Ferrari’s return to the front also strengthens Italian F1 interest
Stefano Domenicali also reiterated that a competitive Ferrari is positive not only for Formula 1 but for Italy more broadly. After a more difficult 2025 campaign, Ferrari’s ability to fight near the front has added another major attraction to an Italian Grand Prix already transformed by Antonelli’s championship challenge.
“Seeing Ferrari fighting at the front again, getting onto the podium, goes beyond the sporting aspect. It has a strong impact on Italy and repercussions in other countries too, including economically,” Stefano Domenicali said.
With Kimi Antonelli leading the championship and Ferrari once again competing near the front, the 2026 Italian Grand Prix arrives amid a level of enthusiasm rarely seen around Italian Formula 1 in recent years. For Antonelli in particular, Monza represents a remarkable homecoming: from a young driver facing one of the most difficult periods of his career 12 months ago to an Italian championship leader carrying hopes that have been waiting since 1953 to be realised again.
