Matteo Bobbi, former GT World Champion and current Formula 1 pundit for Sky Sport, offered his analysis of the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix during the post-race program Sky Race Anatomy, placing particular emphasis on the difficult period currently being experienced by young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Bobbi’s perspective
During the broadcast, Matteo Bobbi reflected on the current state of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, one of the most highly anticipated young talents in the Mercedes Formula 1 driver program. Bobbi began by highlighting the potential the Italian has already demonstrated in his rookie season: “We’re talking about a driver who took pole position in the Sprint Qualifying session in Miami, and who then went on to finish on the podium in Canada. That clearly shows he is more than capable behind the wheel.”
However, Bobbi then addressed the recent dip in form and what might be behind it. “So, what has happened in this period? The pressure has increased significantly. People are constantly talking—’Will Max Verstappen join Mercedes?’ Even the rumors you wish you could ignore eventually reach your ears.”
According to Bobbi, this external pressure can quickly translate into psychological strain for a young driver still trying to find his footing in Formula 1. “What happens then? You go out on track thinking, ‘Now I’ll show everyone what I can do,’ you push a little too hard, you start making mistakes, and you lose confidence.”
Bobbi went on to suggest that the car may not be ideally suited to Antonelli’s driving style at the moment: “Kimi Antonelli has lost confidence in the car, which perhaps isn’t adapting perfectly to his driving characteristics.”
Despite the current difficulties, Bobbi expressed optimism about the young driver’s ability to bounce back. “He just needs to get a solid result under his belt. I’d bet everything that if he manages to achieve one strong performance, it will unlock him mentally and get him back on track,” the Sky Sport expert concluded.
