Lando Norris returns to Singapore with confidence, aiming to reduce the gap to his teammate on a circuit that highlights the technical strengths of the McLaren MCL39.
After a week-long break, Formula 1 returns to Singapore, a track where Norris had no rivals last year, demonstrating how perfectly the layout suits the McLaren car. The Singapore GP could therefore help close the current 25-point gap between the two papaya drivers. Norris himself expressed enthusiasm for the city-state circuit at the start of interviews, admitting that it is one of his favorite tracks on the calendar.
Attention quickly shifted to the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, who, according to some commentators, is back in the fight for a fifth consecutive title. While this may currently seem unlikely – the checkered flag in Singapore will ultimately decide – the Englishman does not rule out a potential battle with the Red Bull driver.
“He is a contender. A couple of weeks ago they introduced some upgrades, and this seems to have brought them closer to our level. We expect a fight, especially with him. The chances of him winning the championship are not zero.”
Lando Norris eager to race in Singapore
With only seven races remaining in the season, every moment could influence the championship. A 25-point deficit is not insurmountable, which is why Norris could put pressure on his teammate by winning at a circuit he enjoys and where he has already triumphed.
“I’m confident. We had a good race here last year. I’ve always loved coming to this track, even if the weather forecast doesn’t look as ideal as in previous seasons. Have the hierarchies changed after Max’s wins? I think he could give us a tough fight. This is a track where they – but also Ferrari and Mercedes – will be strong. But so will we.”
McLaren focuses on the Constructors’ Championship
The McLaren driver also highlighted the team’s main goal: winning their tenth Constructors’ Championship.
“For now, we’re focused on the Constructors’ Title, which could come this weekend. It’s been a unique year. We could have won all of the first seven races, but the competitors have improved in the meantime, and now Red Bull seems much closer,” Norris concluded.
