Sergio Perez and Red Bull, a partnership set to last: the Guadalajara driver, at the center of many rumors about his future, spoke about his decision to stay at Milton Keynes despite the offers he received from other F1 teams.
After a strong start to the season, which seemed to banish the ghosts of 2023, Checo Perez has faced significant difficulties as the season progressed. With four podiums in the first five races of the current championship, the Mexican had convinced everyone, including Red Bull, who quickly confirmed him alongside Max Verstappen for 2025.
For many, the renewal offered by Christian Horner‘s team to the former Racing Point driver seemed premature and hasty. After a promising start to 2024, the old struggles returned mid-season: anonymous races, poor car feel, exits in Q2 or even Q1, and a podium that has been absent since the Chinese Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez: “Courted by other teams, but I chose Red Bull”
Yet, despite the crises and numerous criticisms he faced over the months, Sergio Perez was heavily courted by other Formula One teams. The driver himself revealed this to GQ. “I had an opportunity, actually two opportunities to change teams.”
After some reflection, Sergio Perez’s choice was clear: “When I thought about it, I realized that I truly love the challenges I face at Red Bull.” The Mexican is not bothered by attacks and rumors: “It’s part of the game. When you have one or two bad races, negative rumors about you come up. In a way, all of this is also part of Red Bull’s culture, from rumors to contract discussions… It’s all part of the game.” – he pointed out.
Staying at Red Bull, alongside Max Verstappen, is a great opportunity for Sergio Perez. “Being Max’s teammate is an incredible challenge, it trains you for all these things. I want to spend the last part of my career at the top, where the pressure is the highest.” Despite acknowledging the difficulties and negative period, Checo remains upbeat: “At the end of the day, 90% of the current grid would love to have had my career.”
