The 2027 Formula 1 driver market is beginning to take shape, with Sergio Perez emerging as a possible Williams option if Carlos Sainz decides to leave Grove. At the same time, Max Verstappen remains the biggest potential prize on the market, although the most realistic scenario currently points towards the Dutchman staying with Red Bull.
The latest speculation centres on Sergio Perez potentially moving from Cadillac to Williams after just one season with Formula 1’s newest team. It is an intriguing possibility, particularly because Carlos Sainz has become increasingly frustrated by Williams’ difficult 2026 campaign and has made clear that his future will depend on how quickly the team can recover.
Sergio Perez linked with Williams for the 2027 F1 season
The idea of Sergio Perez joining Williams in 2027 may initially sound surprising, but it becomes more plausible if Carlos Sainz decides that his future lies elsewhere. A driver’s patience is never unlimited, especially when the car is not delivering the expected performance.
Williams has struggled badly in 2026 after a much more encouraging previous season. Carlos Sainz has openly indicated that his long-term plans will depend on the speed of the team’s recovery, and the fact that Formula 1 has already reached its summer break without a major turnaround inevitably raises questions.
According to reports originating in Japan, Sergio Perez’s management has already opened a line of communication with Williams regarding a potential move for next season. Nothing has been confirmed, and any deal would naturally depend on a vacancy becoming available at Grove.
Sergio Perez already has a contract with Cadillac, which announced the Mexican on a multi-year agreement ahead of its 2026 Formula 1 debut. The general understanding in the paddock has been that he is tied to the American team beyond this season, making any potential Williams move dependent on the precise terms of that deal and the willingness of all parties involved.
After leaving Red Bull, Sergio Perez spent the 2025 season away from Formula 1 before returning with Cadillac. His absence also prompted a reassessment of his years alongside Max Verstappen, particularly after other drivers subsequently struggled to extract consistent performance from the second Red Bull.
Carlos Sainz could become the key to the 2027 driver market
If Sergio Perez is genuinely considering his options, Williams would appear one of the most logical possibilities should Carlos Sainz leave. The Spaniard could become one of the key pieces in the 2027 driver-market puzzle because his decision has the potential to create movement elsewhere.
Williams is already increasingly focused on 2027. Alex Albon has acknowledged that the upgrades expected after the summer break are unlikely to transform the current car overnight, with a considerable part of the team’s effort already directed towards its next project.
That is precisely the issue facing Carlos Sainz. If he leaves Grove, Audi is one possible destination that continues to surface. Carlos Sainz held extensive discussions with the German manufacturer’s project during 2024 before eventually choosing Williams.
Mattia Binotto has, however, cooled that possibility by expressing satisfaction with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto. That leaves fewer obvious openings for Carlos Sainz among the established teams.
Aston Martin could offer Carlos Sainz an intriguing alternative
Aston Martin remains perhaps the most interesting potential option, although much depends on Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion still has to determine how long he wants to continue racing, and any decision to retire would immediately make his seat one of the most attractive available on the grid.
For now, however, Fernando Alonso has shown little indication that he is eager to stop. His future with the Silverstone team has already become an important subject, with the Spaniard making his Aston Martin intentions increasingly clear.
The upgrades expected around the resumption of the championship could also provide a clearer indication of Aston Martin’s long-term potential. If they point towards a more competitive future, Fernando Alonso could have even more reason to continue.
Looking further ahead, Red Bull could potentially become an option for Carlos Sainz in 2028. That possibility, however, remains too distant to carry much weight in the immediate 2027 market.
Max Verstappen increasingly likely to remain with Red Bull
Then there is Max Verstappen, the one driver capable of reshuffling almost the entire Formula 1 market by himself. The Dutchman has endured a much more difficult 2026 season with Red Bull, whose car has fallen behind the leading opposition and proved significantly harder to manage than the machinery that previously carried him to championship success.
That frustration has fuelled constant speculation about his future. McLaren has been mentioned repeatedly, while Mercedes was strongly linked with Max Verstappen before that. Every frustrated team-radio message or unhappy expression during a difficult weekend has inevitably been interpreted as another clue that he might leave.
The discussion intensified further following Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff’s summer-break meetings, which again placed the Mercedes possibility under the spotlight.
Yet the most realistic interpretation heading into the second half of the season is considerably less dramatic: Max Verstappen appears more likely to remain at Red Bull for 2027.
Why Max Verstappen has few obvious alternatives for 2027
That is not necessarily because Max Verstappen has suddenly become satisfied with Red Bull’s performance. Rather, the number of genuinely attractive alternatives is limited.
McLaren already has Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, two established drivers around whom the team has built its future. Although rumours of contact with Max Verstappen have persisted, discussing a possible move and actually creating a place for him are very different matters, particularly when the financial and organisational consequences of signing one of Formula 1’s highest-paid drivers are considered.
Max Verstappen also remains formally contracted to Red Bull through 2028, even though reported performance-related clauses have continued to generate speculation about whether he could leave earlier.
His camp has consistently indicated that remaining with Red Bull is the preferred option if the team can deliver sufficient performance. Laurent Mekies has also made no secret of Red Bull’s ideal scenario: retaining Max Verstappen while continuing with Isack Hadjar, whose progress has been one of the positive stories of the season. If Max Verstappen were to activate an exit mechanism, the entire market could change almost immediately. For now, however, there appears to be considerably more speculation than genuine movement.
Other 2027 F1 seats remain in play
Further down the grid, several other situations remain unresolved. Esteban Ocon’s position at Haas does not appear untouchable, while Leonardo Fornaroli is among the young drivers attracting attention.
Racing Bulls must decide how to shape its future from a group that includes Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad and the rapidly emerging Nikola Tsolov. Franco Colapinto, meanwhile, still needs to convince Alpine that he deserves another season alongside Pierre Gasly.
At the front, the picture appears more stable. Ferrari has Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, while Mercedes currently has Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Unless Max Verstappen unexpectedly triggers a major reshuffle, those teams have little immediate reason to enter the market.
That leaves Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez as two of the most intriguing names to watch. If Carlos Sainz leaves Williams and Sergio Perez genuinely becomes available, one move could trigger several others. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, remains capable of turning the entire market upside down, but for the moment Red Bull still appears the most likely place for him in 2027.
