After four years alongside Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez’s adventure with Red Bull will not continue in 2025. The Mexican driver will be replaced by young Liam Lawson, perhaps for the good of Formula 1…
Endless struggles
Five wins, three pole positions, eight fastest laps, and twenty-nine podiums: these are Checo’s statistics with the Milton Keynes team over ninety Grands Prix.
Worrying numbers compared to a teammate who, while undoubtedly one of the best drivers of his generation (and perhaps in history), has won four world titles in the same period, breaking record after record.
Sergio Pérez, for his part, has always struggled mentally, even during favorable moments like the start of the 2023 season.
One mistake followed another, and his self-confidence plummeted further and further, eventually hitting rock bottom and preventing him from performing at the level he once showed with Force India/Racing Point.
It is undeniable that his underwhelming performances made Formula 1 somewhat more predictable than usual: in the Red Bull garage, there was never any competition between him and Max Verstappen.
To be clear, Liam Lawson is unlikely to give Max Verstappen much trouble; but at least he represents a breath of fresh air, another young talent eager to prove his worth.
In short, Formula 1 fans thank Sergio Pérez for stepping aside as a mentally drained driver. However, this does not mean that a possible return in the future—at his best form, of course—wouldn’t be welcomed. On that note, keep an eye on the opportunity called Cadillac for 2026…
