Sergio Perez eyes F1 return in 2026 as Jonathan Wheatley endorses his speed. Sergio Perez could return to Formula 1 in 2026.

Sergio Perez, Red Bull 2024

Sergio Perez could make a return to the Formula 1 grid in 2026, and while Cadillac remains the most likely destination, the possibility of a move to Alpine is gaining traction.

Sergio Perez Could Return to Formula 1
Given the recent performances of Red Bull Racing’s current second drivers, there are likely many in Milton Keynes now rethinking the decision to part ways with Sergio Perez. Although the Mexican driver often lagged behind the dominant results of Max Verstappen, he consistently provided valuable technical feedback and race experience—an asset that current Red Bull drivers like Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda are not yet able to offer to the same extent.

The struggles currently facing the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, highlighted by the dismissal of long-time Team Principal Christian Horner, have helped reframe the narrative around Sergio Perez’s past performances. The criticism that dogged him in recent seasons has softened somewhat, and this shift in perception now provides “Checo” with a fresh opportunity to return to Formula 1 after spending a season on the sidelines.

One of his most vocal supporters is Jonathan Wheatley, the current Team Principal of Kick Sauber and former Sporting Director at Red Bull Racing. Wheatley remains firmly convinced of Perez’s abilities and is recommending the Mexican veteran—car number 11—to midfield teams looking to strengthen their lineup for the upcoming 2026 F1 regulations.

Jonathan Wheatley’s Comments
“Checo has a great personality and a fantastic attitude toward life. I have no doubts about his pace and natural speed,” stated Jonathan Wheatley. “I don’t think being away from the grid this year is a problem—he knows how to drive, that’s never been in question. I spent a lot of time with him in the early years, and what I appreciated most was how he challenged me in my role. He made me question whether I was really giving my best, not in a critical way, but in a constructive, motivating manner.”

Wheatley added: “I believe he helped me improve in my job, and I like to think the influence might have been mutual. Sergio Perez is completely focused on performance, and that’s exactly what you want in a Formula 1 driver.”

Perez Weighs His Options for 2026 Return
Sergio Perez is eager to return to Formula 1, but only if the right project and team present themselves. He is currently in talks with multiple constructors, carefully evaluating each opportunity. While the most likely landing spot continues to be the new Cadillac F1 team, the Alpine Formula 1 team is now emerging as a strong alternative due to the ongoing struggles of their current driver, Franco Colapinto.
