
Sauber continues to look towards the future, the future of Audi. This morning, the Swiss team announced that Jonathan Wheatley will soon become the new team principal.
The former sporting director of Red Bull Racing will take on the new role from April 1, making his debut on the Sauber pit wall starting from the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.
Wheatley, along with Chief Technical Officer Mattia Binotto, will lead the Sauber team in the final season before Audi’s arrival, officially scheduled for January 1, 2026, but already underway following decisions made in recent months.
Both Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley will report directly to Gernot Dollner, chairman of the board of Sauber Motorsport AG.
Wheatley succeeds Alessandro Alunni Bravi, who left Hinwil at the end of January to take on a new role at McLaren Racing (Chief Business Affairs Officer of Woking, reporting directly to Zak Brown).
The former operational member of Red Bull Racing boasts a career spanning over thirty years in Formula 1. He began his career at Benetton in the early 90s, holding the role of chief mechanic.
After holding the same role at Renault, he moved to Red Bull Racing in 2006, where he became a key figure in the team’s successes, contributing to the acquisition of 6 Constructors’ titles and 7 Drivers’ titles.
