Sergio Perez has emerged as a credible candidate for Williams in 2027, with the Mexican reportedly under consideration as a potential replacement for Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard has grown increasingly disappointed with the Grove team’s situation after entering the project with considerable expectations, while Williams’ difficult 2026 campaign has raised questions over whether he will remain beyond the end of the season.
Several comments over recent race weekends have suggested that relations within Williams are not at their best, with Carlos Sainz arguably the most frustrated figure after the promises made by team principal James Vowles towards the end of 2024. Against the backdrop of the team’s problems, which began with delays in the delivery of the FW48 and have continued through a challenging season, Sainz could decide to move on and make way for Sergio Perez, according to Japanese outlet Autosport WEB (as-web).
Sergio Perez emerges as a 2027 Williams option
Sergio Perez returned to Formula 1 in 2026 following a year-long sabbatical. Red Bull opted not to retain him for 2025, initially choosing Liam Lawson and subsequently Yuki Tsunoda, but the major difficulties experienced by both younger drivers ultimately cast Perez’s work alongside Max Verstappen in a more favourable light.
That helped the Mexican secure his return to the grid, with Cadillac making him its first choice as the American operation prepared for its Formula 1 debut. The new team has inevitably faced the difficulties associated with entering F1 from scratch. Until January 2025, Cadillac had not even begun the recruitment process required to build its working groups at the circuit and factory.
That was precisely why Cadillac opted for Perez and Valtteri Bottas, two enormously experienced Formula 1 drivers capable of providing clear technical direction for the car while demonstrating the working standards required within an F1 team. Perez has performed those duties more effectively so far, with the Mexican faster than Bottas during the first half of 2026 and even coming close to scoring Cadillac’s first point in Monaco.
Williams has watched Cadillac move closer during the opening half of the championship and has taken note of Perez’s work. The possibility comes at a time when Williams is still trying to overcome the limitations of its 2026 car, despite further development being planned.
A move to Grove could therefore suit both sides. Sergio Perez would have the opportunity to spend the closing stage of his Formula 1 career with one of the championship’s historic teams, while Williams would gain a credible and highly experienced replacement if Carlos Sainz decides to leave.
What happens to Carlos Sainz if he leaves Williams?
Carlos Sainz is not satisfied with his situation at Williams and is considering whether remaining with the team is the right decision. The former Ferrari driver continues to attract interest from midfield teams, although unlike two years ago he is no longer in a position to demand a seat with one of the leading outfits.
That would be an unfortunate outcome given how competitive Sainz was at times during the second half of 2025. Within only a few months, however, the picture has changed dramatically and the Spaniard now finds himself fighting towards the back of the Formula 1 grid.
His future could also depend heavily on Fernando Alonso’s decision for 2027, one of several major uncertainties shaping the wider 2027 Formula 1 driver market. If the two-time world champion decides to retire, Carlos Sainz could represent a strong option for Aston Martin.
Alonso’s intentions are therefore particularly important, with the Spaniard having already addressed speculation surrounding his Aston Martin future and a possible Alpine return. Should Alonso instead continue racing, another possibility could emerge for Sainz at Alpine, potentially replacing Franco Colapinto.
The Audi route, meanwhile, appears to have lost momentum after Mattia Binotto seemingly closed the door on that possibility. With several interconnected decisions still to be made, the futures of Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez could become important pieces of the 2027 driver-market puzzle.
Cadillac could also play a wider role in that market. The American team has already been linked with several possible moves for 2027, including young drivers backed by established F1 operations, further underlining how Cadillac could become an important factor in the 2027 driver market.
