Sergio Perez far behind Max Verstappen
Sergio Perez is at risk of losing his position, and he is well aware of it. For the first time, the Mexican driver has shown insecurity about his future at Red Bull, and understandably so, given his performance is light years away from Max Verstappen’s. Unable to defend his underwhelming results, Checo has shifted to praising the world champion, describing 2024 as Super Max’s best season during their four years as teammates.
Sergio Perez’s comments
“Max has had his best season since 2021. The way he has pushed the team from outside the car, working hard throughout the year, has been impressive. There were many periods during the year when we were very far off, and he pushed the team in all areas, in every aspect. Max has made great strides outside the car,” Sergio Perez said.
“His talent and speed have been evident since day one, but his most significant improvement over these years has been outside the car. I’m referring to the way he reads races, works with the team, and drives the team forward.”
Nightmare statistics
As has often been the case during his time at Red Bull, Sergio Perez started the season well but faded once the Milton Keynes team introduced its first updates. These updates, naturally geared toward Verstappen’s preferences, have consistently posed challenges for Sergio Perez, leading to disastrous performances in the middle of the season.
Some figures clearly illustrate the struggles of #11 at Red Bull: adding Sergio Perez’s points from 2023 and 2024 together equals Max Verstappen‘s points from 2024 alone (437). Moreover, this year, Sergio Perez was 285 points behind his teammate, a gap greater than the combined deficit of all other nine second drivers (275). These are numbers that Christian Horner and Helmut Marko are well aware of and cannot overlook when evaluating options for 2025, even though Perez has a contract valid through 2025.
