McLaren could clinch the 2025 Constructors’ Championship at Baku with a record seven races remaining. No team has ever achieved this feat, not even the dominant Red Bull of 2023.
McLaren aims for first match point in Baku
The record is within reach. At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, McLaren has the chance to write another historic chapter in Formula 1 by securing the Constructors’ Championship with seven rounds to spare. To beat the record, McLaren must maintain a 346-point advantage over its rivals. Currently, they hold a 337-point lead over Ferrari, 357 over Mercedes, and 378 over Red Bull. This means that by gaining just nine more points on Ferrari, losing a maximum of 11 to Mercedes, and no more than 32 to Red Bull, McLaren could officially secure the championship.
The words of Lando Norris
For Lando Norris, the main drivers of this success are the selfless drivers themselves and team principal Andrea Stella. “We respect the team and we are not selfish. I think that’s something you don’t find anywhere else. And then there are Andrea and Zak [Brown]. Andrea, for me, is one of the most important pieces. If I had to point to someone in particular, I would say Andrea. I think he has been an integral part of all of this: he understands people perfectly and knows how to get the best out of them within the team,” Norris said.
“I’m fairly confident. It would be wrong not to trust that we will have another strong weekend. But at Monza we saw that the others are still close and can beat us, especially on low-downforce tracks. We know there are some circuits where we aren’t as strong. I wouldn’t say we have weak tracks, but certainly some circuits aren’t as favorable to us. Last year here, for example, we struggled to win with Oscar,” he added, looking ahead to Sunday’s race.
