The Swiss team is currently ninth in the standings but still believes in its chances of climbing up to P6 in the championship
The other battle
In this final stretch of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the fight is not only for the Drivers’ World Championship and the second spot in the Constructors’ standings. Several midfield teams are also engaged in a close battle that may attract less public attention but carries great importance for those directly involved, as it represents millions of dollars in prize money. It is the fight for sixth place in the championship, with four teams separated by just 12 points.
That is the gap currently dividing Racing Bulls, sixth with 72 points, from Sauber, ninth with 60. Between them sit Aston Martin on 69 and Haas on 62. In the Mexican Grand Prix, Sauber managed to add points to its tally thanks to Gabriel Bortoleto’s tenth-place finish, but Haas’s strong weekend – with Oliver Bearman finishing fourth and Esteban Ocon ninth – allowed the American team to move ahead of the Swiss outfit.
Wheatley rallies the team
Inside the team that will become Audi next season, there is still confidence in pulling off what would be an incredible comeback in the final four Grands Prix. “In Mexico, Haas took quite a few points from us in the championship,” said team principal Jonathan Wheatley. “It dropped us down to ninth place, at least for now. But the gaps in the standings are really small. A good weekend can completely turn the situation around. Mathematically, even sixth place is not out of our reach,” added the former Red Bull man.
“We’ve already talked about how important it is to execute everything perfectly in every race because the margins are very tight,” Wheatley told reporters in Mexico. “And I think that for a young team that is growing and finding its rhythm, we are doing a decent job right now. There are continuous improvements, and I can feel the progress at every race weekend. But we are fighting against very strong teams and groups of engineers who have been working together for a long time. I like that; it’s a great championship. We’re in the fight, and I will never give up until it’s mathematically impossible.”
