In the final two races of the 2025 season, with the drivers’ championship still undecided, McLaren could be forced into a difficult decision: sacrifice Oscar Piastri and focus entirely on Lando Norris.
We are now in the closing stages of the 2025 season. Against all expectations, considering how the year began and how it has developed, the championship is still open. McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, is under intense pressure from Max Verstappen, who has returned to full title contention after recovering over 100 points. Knowing the abilities of the Dutchman, the Woking team now faces an extremely complex decision.
Driver management at McLaren
Throughout the long season, McLaren has followed a clear approach: the team manages its drivers without favoring either one. If, by chance, one driver receives an advantage in a race, the balance is restored in the next round. Then there are the famous “Papaya Rules”: freedom to race on track fairly, without creating dangerous or unnecessarily risky situations.
However, this philosophy has also deprived fans of a true on-track battle between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Apart from a few exceptions, such as the Canadian GP and the Austrian GP, the two Woking drivers have rarely faced off in direct duels.
The decisive choice
Now, with just two races and a Sprint Race remaining, and with victories alternating between the two McLaren drivers and some opportunities lost in spectacular fashion, the championship standings show Lando Norris leading with 390 points, while Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen are tied at 366 points. The gap between the Australian and his teammate is 24 points, with 58 still up for grabs.
McLaren finds itself at a true crossroads. The team may be forced to make a decision with inevitable repercussions on internal dynamics: is it time to tell Oscar Piastri to take the role of “second driver” and put everything behind Norris? Difficult, considering that the Australian, just like Max Verstappen, is still mathematically in contention for the title. At the same time, Norris cannot afford to lose precious points due to his teammate.
Therefore, the team must decide: will Oscar Piastri accept the role of wingman despite numerous rumors that McLaren is already leaning toward supporting Lando Norris? Or could this situation escalate into internal chaos at the most critical moment of the season?
Whatever they choose, the next ten days will define not just this championship, but how McLaren is viewed for years to come.
