Season already over for Aston Martin?
The much-anticipated combination of Fernando Alonso behind the wheel, the Honda power unit under the engine cover and Adrian Newey at the drawing board seemed to offer huge promise for Aston Martin’s long-awaited step forward in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Instead, winter testing painted a very different picture. The Silverstone-based squad found itself at the bottom of the unofficial pecking order, alongside Cadillac — a scenario that was difficult to predict and, above all, hard to accept for those directly involved in the ambitious project backed by Lawrence Stroll.
Aston Martin in serious trouble
Riccardo Patrese, who raced for Williams during the era when Adrian Newey was already making cars fly with his technical brilliance, shared his thoughts on what has been a disastrous start to 2026 for Aston Martin. In his view, the main culprit behind the team’s struggles is the Honda power unit.
“Adrian Newey looks lost,” the former driver said in an interview with talkSPORT BET Slots Site. “But I think the biggest problem is Honda. I’ve read that for at least six or seven months they won’t have an engine that works properly because they are burning the battery, and the kilowatts the battery can deliver are not enough to achieve the required power.”
The issue appears to lie in the hybrid system, a crucial component under the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, where electrical power plays a significantly larger role than in previous engine eras. If the energy store cannot consistently provide the necessary output, overall performance inevitably suffers — particularly in acceleration phases and top-speed runs.
“If they have to lose six months of the season before getting close to the right engine package, their season is finished,” Patrese added. “It’s a shame because, knowing Adrian well, I know he is someone who never stops working to find a solution. Surely at the moment he will be a bit worried, just as the team owner, Mr. Stroll, probably is. He has invested a lot of money in Aston Martin with Adrian Newey at the head of the programme.”
Patrese did not hide his personal concern for the legendary designer’s situation.
“What really worries me is the impact on Adrian Newey at Aston Martin, because he is a friend of mine and a fantastic engineer. Probably this year will be a complete failure for them, because Honda is not able to provide the battery charge required to deliver the necessary power. I hope Adrian can return to dominating as an engineer, as he has done over the last 30 years, but it seems that this year the car will not be competitive.”
If these concerns prove accurate, Aston Martin’s ambitious 2026 Formula 1 project could face a serious setback, with reliability and hybrid performance becoming decisive factors in a season that may already be slipping away.
