Riccardo Patrese backs Adrian Newey and believes Aston Martin can still become title contenders. Riccardo Patrese believes criticism of Adrian Newey is unjustified.

Fernando Alonso’s future under consideration

The 2026 Formula 1 season has turned out to be far more difficult than Fernando Alonso expected. The Spanish driver committed to the Aston Martin project with the goal of fighting for a world championship in 2026, encouraged by Lawrence Stroll’s major investments and the arrival of high-profile figures like Adrian Newey.

However, the results from the opening phase of the 2026 campaign have painted a very different picture. Aston Martin has been one of the biggest disappointments on the grid and, according to some observers, perhaps one of the most significant failures in the team’s Formula 1 history.

Given the circumstances, it is understandable that the two-time world champion is evaluating his future in the sport. At the same time, changing teams simply for the sake of change may not be the best solution. Alonso has experienced several career moves that ultimately failed to deliver the results he hoped for.

For now, Aston Martin remains his preferred option, but the team must quickly demonstrate meaningful progress through the corrective measures being introduced under Adrian Newey’s technical leadership. That is also the hope of Riccardo Patrese, who believes Alonso should continue to trust the legendary British designer.

Patrese’s view

Speaking to BetBrothers, the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship runner-up defended Adrian Newey and argued that the criticism directed at him has been unfair.

Patrese said that he felt sorry for Fernando Alonso, but also for Adrian Newey, who has been subjected to unjustified criticism from sections of the media. He noted that everyone knows how talented Newey is, but that this year’s project has unfortunately not worked as expected. According to Patrese, Alonso is simply paying the price for an unfavorable technical situation.

The former Formula 1 driver also suggested that much of Aston Martin’s future competitiveness depends on Honda.

Patrese explained that he believes the situation is largely in Honda’s hands. In his view, the main weakness lies with the power unit, although he emphasized that Honda has the capability to become much stronger once the current issues are resolved.

He acknowledged that Fernando Alonso is understandably frustrated, but warned against making quick judgments in Formula 1. Patrese pointed out that one season can be disappointing, while the next may bring a highly competitive engine, an improved car, and even championship-winning potential.

For that reason, he believes everyone should be cautious about drawing conclusions too early, as fortunes in Formula 1 can change dramatically in a very short period of time.
