Having won five out of six races, McLaren is currently the clear favorite for the 2025 Formula 1 championship, but Red Bull doesn’t seem willing to accept that. Max Verstappen appears to be the only one capable of challenging the two papaya cars, although the clear superiority of the McLarens makes it difficult even for him to fight and keep pace.
In recent weeks, there has been renewed speculation about whether McLaren is fully compliant with the regulations. The suspicion was raised by Red Bull, and responses were quick to follow. Mercedes has also taken a stance on the matter, and the McLaren CEO responded with two provocations.
Accusations against McLaren are not the only way Red Bull is going after the team off-track. Andrea Stella, in fact, explained: “Red Bull is very good at building fast cars, exceptionally good at driving fast cars, and very good at creating a narrative in their favor.”
Expanding on the topic, the McLaren team principal added that Red Bull uses communication to portray itself heroically. “Sometimes they create a narrative like: ‘Oh, we’re performing miracles here, others should be winning every single free practice, qualifying, and race.’” What Stella means is that Red Bull is trying to put pressure on the papaya team by saying that, despite having the best car, they are failing to exploit its full potential.
“But this is the narrative created by some of our competitors, which we read from time to time, but then we turn the page and focus on ourselves: we look at the numbers, the facts, and also what we should improve.”
