The Red Bull driver is hunting for more race victories as he tries to close the gap in the championship.
The Dutchman’s words
Max Verstappen, with his recent comeback, seemed ready to challenge the McLaren drivers in the title fight. However, in the last two Grands Prix, he had to settle for two third-place finishes. Combined with Lando Norris’ victories, this has put Max Verstappen 49 points behind the leader.
“We tried to maximize the car’s potential and I think most of the time we succeeded, so I’m satisfied with that,” Verstappen said ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, reflecting on the season as a whole. “I’ve enjoyed the highs and the wins we’ve achieved, but at the same time, of course, the lows haven’t been great, and that’s why we’re not in the title fight. Mid-season, or after the summer break, we were over 100 points behind, and it really seemed like it would just keep getting worse. But at some point, we managed to turn things around significantly, even with a bit of luck, and I think that’s something to be proud of.”
Max Verstappen knows that to still have a chance at defending the title, a lot of luck will be needed, or more precisely, mistakes from Lando Norris: “There’s not much I can do. We need a lot of luck from now until the end just to even have a chance, so personally I’m not thinking about it.” – the four-time Formula 1 world champion concluded ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.
