Max Verstappen, Canada as a last chance
Recovering 49 points from Oscar Piastri and 39 from Lando Norris is no easy feat for anyone, not even four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The Dutch ace won’t be helped by the upcoming weekend in Montreal, even though he has won the last three editions there: it’s a stop-and-go circuit that places a lot of emphasis on traction and doesn’t feature many high-speed corners; it also has many curbs, a characteristic to which Red Bull has historically been very sensitive.
Additionally, Verstappen needs to take some risks and be aggressive to make up ground. However, the Dutchman may be held back by the risk of disqualification (which will also hang over him in Austria), forcing him to carefully measure every maneuver at the circuit named after Gilles Villeneuve. Here is what he said ahead of the Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen’s words
“Barcelona was a disappointment for us, and even though we gave it our all, the race didn’t go the way we wanted. We’re looking forward to going to Canada, it’s a very unique track, with old-school curbs and many overtaking opportunities,” said Verstappen. “Car setup will be important, and it’s always a bigger challenge with the heavy braking zones. Last year’s race was very exciting, we managed to bring home the win and we hope to deliver a strong performance again this week. The weather conditions seem better than last year, so we’ll see what happens.”
Yuki Tsunoda’s words
Teammate Yuki Tsunoda will celebrate his 100th race weekend in Canada: “I love Montreal and the general atmosphere of the city, the food, and the shopping. This weekend will also be my 100th race: it feels like I just started, but also like this has always been my life. Each of these 100 races has been special, I feel lucky to be in this sport and I’d like to celebrate with a result that matches the occasion. After the race, I did two days of testing in Barcelona and also spent time in the simulator in Milton Keynes, we worked hard together and now I have a lot more mileage with the car. We need to have a better qualifying and we’ve worked towards that. The weather in Canada can bring surprises, but it looks like it might finally be dry and stable, which should help us reach our goals.”
