Learning from the past. This will be the imperative in Milton Keynes after the difficulties experienced with Sergio Perez. Red Bull has decided to strongly back Liam Lawson, even allowing him to participate in a private test in Jerez.
The goal is obviously to ensure that the New Zealander is as prepared as possible for his debut with the new team. To achieve this, he will need to quickly adapt to the characteristics of a car that, while similar, has many differences compared to the VCARB he has driven so far.
Private test before Bahrain testing
This explains the decision by Helmut Marko and Christian Horner to organize a private test with Liam Lawson in a past Red Bull car. Ahead of the three-day Bahrain session, the former VCARB driver ran laps with the RB19 at the Jerez circuit.
In the coming days, the filming day for the new RB21 will take place, officially kicking off 2025 for the Milton Keynes team. This is the first car developed without Adrian Newey’s input after the British mastermind decided to accept Aston Martin’s offer.
For this reason, given the difficulties faced in 2024, it will be interesting to assess the level of the RB21. The performance of the new car could have an impact on Max Verstappen’s uncertainties about his future. The Dutchman is not fully convinced about continuing with the team that made him great and may soon start looking elsewhere.
