Red Bull admits poor performance in Hungary, promises stronger return after summer break. Red Bull faced a disappointing Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.

Max Verstappen, 2024 F1

Red Bull’s Hungarian Grand Prix weekend ended in disappointment, marked by an unusual lack of performance evident from the very first practice sessions. Neither Max Verstappen’s usual excellence nor Yuki Tsunoda’s slightly improved feel with the car was enough to save the weekend. The team tried to recover until the very end, but questions and disappointment outweighed answers.

“Unfortunately, it was not a good weekend for us and we need to understand why,” admitted Max Verstappen, despite finishing ninth. “During the race, we got stuck in traffic and struggled with grip, especially in low and medium-speed corners. The balance just wasn’t there. As always, we will analyze everything to improve ahead of Zandvoort. It was a tough race, but now the summer break is coming, which will help us recharge. There are still many races left and we can definitely do much better.”

Yuki Tsunoda: “I will go straight to the simulator”

Even more disappointing was Yuki Tsunoda’s result, finishing seventeenth after starting from the pit lane and suffering a technical issue that turned the race into a nightmare.

“We knew it would be difficult to score points, but the damage to the front wing compromised everything. We lost the gurney flap and with it, grip and pace. We couldn’t run effective strategies anymore. However, I can see some positives: from Spa onwards, with the new floor, we have closed the gap to Max. The difference is down to one tenth of a second — not many can say that. Tomorrow, I’ll be in the simulator already to analyze mistakes and prepare better for the second part of the season. It’s frustrating, but we will respond.”

Laurent Mekies: “We didn’t have the performance”

A clear analysis also came from team principal Laurent Mekies, who openly acknowledged the car’s unusual technical shortcomings and the need to react:

“It was a very difficult weekend right from FP1, and the race confirmed it. We tried everything, but we lacked the base to fight at the front. We didn’t have the pace, neither with Max nor with Yuki. It’s important that we gathered data; this will help us avoid finding ourselves in such situations again. Now we will use the break to reflect and work. We do not underestimate the path ahead, but we have talented people and want to return to the track with a different level of performance.”
