Ralf Schumacher responded to Antonio Perez’s homophobic accusations made in defense of his son, Checo, through a post on his Instagram profile.
“The media should at least apologize. There is someone who used to be a Formula 1 driver and is now a pundit: this journalist first claimed that Checo is already out of Red Bull, then, the following week, came out as gay.”
“I don’t know, maybe he was in love with Checo. You know what I mean… There are so many strange things: it’s no longer clear if this person is a journalist, a woman, or a man. His words have left doubts, not about Checo Perez, but about what his wife said about him.”
These were the words of Antonio Perez Garibay, one of the paddock’s most irreverent figures, as he defended his son Checo (in a highly questionable manner) against recent comments by Ralf Schumacher suggesting that the Guadalajara native’s time at Red Bull is nearing its end.
The homophobic remarks made by Perez Sr. understandably caused widespread shock among social media users and beyond, with some even calling on Formula 1 to take serious action, similar to the measures taken last year following Nelson Piquet’s comments about Lewis Hamilton.
A textbook response
More than 24 hours later, the brother of the seven-time world champion broke his silence via social media, sharing the following message on his Instagram profile:
“I too would stand 100% by my son and try to help him. That’s what a father does. As for the approach, I would act differently, but we know Mr. Perez with all his emotions. For that reason, I don’t hold it against him. However, I believe that on-track results (from Checo, ed.) would make for better talking points.” – the former Formula 1 driver wrote.
