Rafael Câmara has apologised to Haas after crashing out of Q2 during qualifying for the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix, bringing a disappointing end to his first Formula 1 qualifying session in front of his home fans. The 21-year-old Brazilian faced exceptionally difficult wet conditions at Interlagos, recovering from an early incident in Q1 before another mistake sent him into the barriers in the second part of qualifying.
Despite his disappointment, the young Haas driver remained encouraged by the support he received from the Brazilian crowd and the lessons learned during a challenging session. Câmara, who has replaced Esteban Ocon at Haas, believes the experience could still prove valuable ahead of Sunday’s race.
Rafael Câmara suffers Q1 scare before crashing out of Brazilian GP qualifying
Rafael Câmara’s first Formula 1 weekend in front of his home supporters has been far from straightforward. The Brazilian, who officially took over Esteban Ocon’s Haas seat for the São Paulo Grand Prix, faced particularly treacherous track conditions as heavy rain complicated qualifying at Interlagos.
His difficulties began in Q1, when he was involved in a minor incident caused by the challenging weather conditions. However, Câmara managed to recover and complete the opening segment, demonstrating his ability to respond to an early setback.
That recovery allowed the Haas rookie to progress into Q2, although the circuit remained extremely difficult to navigate. The combination of rain and an unpredictable track surface made qualifying a demanding experience, particularly for a driver competing in his first Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend.
In Q2, another mistake had more serious consequences. Câmara lost control of his Haas and ended up in the barriers, bringing his qualifying session to a premature conclusion.
It was a disappointing outcome for the 21-year-old, who had been looking forward to competing at home in front of thousands of Brazilian supporters. Nevertheless, his progression beyond Q1 provided a positive element to an otherwise frustrating afternoon.
Rafael Câmara apologises to Haas after Q2 crash at Interlagos
Speaking to Sky Sport F1 after qualifying, Rafael Câmara reflected on the emotions of competing in front of his home crowd and the disappointment of making a costly mistake. Rather than feeling additional pressure from the spectators, he explained that their encouragement had given him extra motivation.
“Being here in front of all these people cheering for me was an extra boost for me rather than pressure,” Câmara said.
The Brazilian also described the extraordinary difficulty of the conditions, acknowledging that pushing close to the limit had ultimately led to an error with significant consequences.
“I think today was the session with the most difficult conditions I’ve ever experienced. But when you’re pushing so hard and you’re so close to achieving your goal, you make a small mistake that has bad consequences.”
Câmara then expressed his regret towards Haas, accepting responsibility for the incident while highlighting the experience gained during qualifying.
“I’m a bit sad for the team and I apologise to them for the mistake. But I think it was a positive session in terms of what we learned, also with tomorrow’s race in mind.”
Haas rookie takes positives from difficult Brazil qualifying debut
Although the qualifying session ended with a crash, Rafael Câmara was determined to focus on the lessons that could help him prepare for his first Formula 1 race.
The Brazilian’s comments reflected the contrasting emotions of his home debut. He was disappointed to have damaged the car and ended his session in the barriers, but the encouragement from the fans and the experience of progressing through Q1 offered reasons for optimism.
The challenging weather was a central feature of the afternoon, underlining the difficulties associated with heavy rain and tyre conditions at Interlagos during the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix.
For Câmara, attention now turns to Sunday’s race and the opportunity to put the lessons from his difficult qualifying debut into practice. His first Formula 1 qualifying session did not end as he had hoped, but the Haas youngster remains appreciative of his home support and determined to make the most of the experience.
