Moments of fear in the United States for former Alpine and Aston Martin Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer, who was on a flight from Savannah to Atlanta when the aircraft experienced a serious technical issue shortly after take-off.
The Boeing 737-900 reportedly suffered a mechanical failure to its left engine soon after departure, forcing the pilots to execute an immediate turn-back procedure in order to land safely. Firefighters and emergency crews were already positioned on the runway as the aircraft returned to the airport.
Fortunately for Szafnauer, as well as for all other passengers and crew members on board, there were no casualties or injuries. The American manager later shared an image of the incident on his social media channels, thanking the pilots for their professionalism and calm response in a critical situation.
“Burned fuel due to engine failure,” he wrote. “A heartfelt thank you to these two professionals for competently handling our engine failure at take-off.”
Over the course of his Formula 1 career, Szafnauer has held several senior roles across multiple teams, including Honda, Force India and Racing Point — the squad now known as Aston Martin — where he served as Team Principal from 2018 to 2022 before moving to Alpine in the same role.
However, after just one season with the French outfit, his tenure came to an end. Since then, Szafnauer has not returned to the Formula 1 paddock, making this aviation scare an unexpected headline involving one of the sport’s most experienced executives.
