Christian Horner has revealed new behind-the-scenes details about his departure from Red Bull Racing and Formula 1, shedding light on who he believes was responsible for the decision.
During the new season of Drive To Survive, set to be released on Netflix on 27 February, the former Team Principal of the Milton Keynes-based squad spoke openly about the circumstances surrounding his exit and the internal revolution that led to Laurent Mekies taking over the leadership role at the end of last season.
Horner reveals who was behind his Red Bull exit
“I feel truly hurt and I have a strong sense of loss. It was all quite sudden. I didn’t really have the opportunity to say a proper goodbye. I would never have imagined finding myself in this position. Obviously, the immediate reaction when something like that is served to you is to say: ‘F*** everyone.’ Something was taken away from me against my will, and it was something very precious to me,” Horner explained to Netflix cameras.
He then addressed speculation involving Max Verstappen’s inner circle. “Max’s father has never been my biggest fan. He has been quite outspoken towards me. But I don’t believe the Verstappens were responsible in any way. I think it was a decision taken by Oliver Mintzlaff, with Helmut Marko acting as an advisor behind the scenes. In the end, things changed within the company and the group. The founder passed away and, after Dietrich Mateschitz’s death, it was probably felt that I perhaps had too much control,” added the now former Red Bull boss.
Christian Horner is currently evaluating several options to make a return to the Formula 1 paddock. It would not be a surprise to see him back in the Netflix spotlight soon — perhaps wearing different colours from the ones fans had long associated with him at Red Bull.
