The toughest race of the season
Formula 1 is about to face its most ‘extreme’ weekend of the season. This weekend, the circus races on the Singapore street circuit, the most demanding and physically challenging track of the entire year. French Alpine driver Pierre Gasly explained just how intense it can be, estimating that drivers can lose around 5kg of body weight over the course of a two-hour Grand Prix—a very particular ‘diet’ that certainly isn’t optional.
“I can’t wait to get back in the car this weekend in Singapore,” said the #10 Alpine driver. “After a difficult weekend in Baku, we’re ready to give our all once again on one of the most extreme circuits of the season. The Marina Bay Street Circuit is a demanding track, so staying fully focused is essential. The lap is quite long and technical, and it’s physically exhausting because of the heat, even at night. During the two hours of the race, we drivers lose about five kilos of weight, all in the form of fluids, so it’s crucial to stay hydrated and keep our body temperature low. We’ve trained hard to make sure we can perform at our best in these conditions, and I’m really ready for the challenge. This is always a fantastic event, and I love racing under the lights in this city. We’ll make sure to make the most of everything the weekend has in store and aim for a strong performance.”
Franco Colapinto eyes his first points of the season
Within Alpine, there is also curiosity about what Franco Colapinto can achieve this weekend, as he continues his quest for his first championship points of the season. “Singapore is definitely one of the most difficult races of the entire season,” confirmed Franco Colapinto. “Last year I faced this unique physical challenge for the first time, so this year I have trained specifically to prepare for the extreme conditions. The circuit is really fun to drive. It’s fast, with many combinations of technical corners, and the races are usually quite exciting. Last year I had a strong start into Turn 1, braking really late. I’m thrilled to get back on track. Racing under the lights is always an incredible experience, and the city is beautiful to visit. We had a difficult weekend in Baku, but the team is fully focused on the upcoming races, and we’ll do our best to achieve a successful weekend.”
