Norris aims for back-to-back success
Lando Norris arrives in Singapore under the spotlight. The McLaren driver dominated last year’s Marina Bay weekend, winning the Grand Prix with a significant margin over the rest of the field. This year, he will need to replicate that performance to reduce the gap to teammate Oscar Piastri in the championship standings and to extend his advantage over a resurgent Max Verstappen, who comes off two consecutive victories and has halved his deficit to Norris over the last three races: from 88 to 44 points.
Singapore: a track Norris loves
Speaking to journalists at the press conference, Lando Norris emphasized his fondness for the challenging Singapore street circuit, while also highlighting the concrete threat Verstappen poses in every race. “I’m confident,” said Norris, “because last year this was a very good race for me. We were very strong, and in general, I have always enjoyed coming here since my first year in 2019. The weather this weekend looks slightly worse than in recent seasons, but I’m still excited. This is one of my favorite tracks of the entire season.”
“Verstappen? For me, he can really challenge us in every race,” continued McLaren’s #4. “Looking back at the start of the season, in the first races, they could win anywhere and also put pressure on us in the Drivers’ Championship. Then we brought updates and improved a bit, but after that, they also introduced upgrades that brought them perhaps back to the same level as us. So we expect them to be strong, although, of course, we arrive here with the ambition to win. We want to regain the form we’ve had throughout the season, but this is a track where Mercedes, Ferrari, and certainly Red Bull can also be strong. But him [Verstappen] in particular.”
On Piastri: the familiar question
Finally, Lando Norris showed a hint of frustration when asked about his championship battle with teammate Oscar Piastri, currently 25 points behind him—the equivalent of a win. “You ask me this question every time; the answer is always the same. You can go back and watch the video from the last time I answered,” he said.
