It has been a spectacular, double-success weekend for Pierre Gasly. The French driver celebrated the official reinstatement of his Monaco Grand Prix podium alongside another highly lucrative haul of points secured via a brilliant seventh-place finish in Barcelona, firmly cementing a highly encouraging start to the season for Alpine.
The Enstone-based squad executed a brilliant tactical recovery on Sunday, capitalizing on unfolding track variables to vault their lead car into the upper tier of the midfield standings. Reflecting on the dramatic turnaround in performance from Friday practice to Sunday’s checkered flag, Pierre Gasly admitted that the final result far exceeded the team’s initial expectations.
“If they had told me on Friday that we would finish seventh, I would have signed up for it without a second thought. I am really happy: we did almost everything right and managed to gather points after a complicated start. The VSC helped us switch to the hard tires, and a few late retirements allowed us to gain positions. We are the best of the rest again — great for the team and precious points for the championship. Compared to Saturday it is a big step forward, even though we still have things to fix. It was a difficult week at times, but I am happy it closes with another good result. The gap to the front remains significant, we need to keep working. Now a short break, then Austria in two weeks.”
While the technical deficit to the top three teams remains a primary focus for the engineers back at the factory, the combined momentum of a retrospective podium and a top-ten finish on a demanding circuit like Montmeló provides a massive boost. By ensuring that the car can consistently convert strategic opportunities into high-value results, Pierre Gasly has firmly established Alpine as a force to be reckoned with heading into the upcoming European rounds.
