Lando Norris and His Passion for Rallying
Last year, there was a rumor circulating in the paddock that an F1 driver had tested rally cars during private tests. The rumor was first spread by colleague Peter Windsor, who now seems to confirm that the driver in question was Lando Norris.
Peter Windsor revealed that Norris is a fan of the rally world, and that some aspects of his driving style resemble those of WRC drivers. So much so that in some tests, the British driver showed himself to be “incredibly good.”
Peter Windsor’s Words
“I know that Lando is a big fan of the World Rally Championship, and I hope I’m not revealing too many secrets when I say that I know he’s been behind the wheel of WRC cars, and he’s incredibly good,” said Windsor. “In Melbourne, on a wet track, you could see that touch and sensitivity that’s characteristic of rally drivers. He was leading, and the way he handled the race, even with a few mistakes, showed pure rally talent. It was simply superb to watch. He has so many qualities, many of which people don’t recognize in him.”
Lando Norris’ case isn’t the only one of drivers crossing between F1 and rallying. Kimi Räikkönen even left the F1 circus at the end of 2009 to spend two years in the WRC before returning to F1 in 2012. And how could we forget Robert Kubica, who, due to an accident in the 2011 Rally of Andorra, had to give up a potentially successful F1 career and a contract with Ferrari.
