This close collaboration allowed Prost to get to know the number 81 car thoroughly, and the impressive results Piastri is now achieving at McLaren have only reinforced Prost’s admiration for him. The four-time Formula 1 world champion has consistently praised Oscar Piastri’s talent, and following Prost’s latest comments, the Australian has now responded.
During an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Alain Prost was asked to share his opinion on the current battle for the Formula 1 World Championship, which sees the two McLaren drivers competing closely. Prost explained, “I know Oscar much better because I was the one who pushed Renault to take him into the Academy a long time ago: they weren’t keen initially.”
Prost added, “I like Oscar. In his approach to racing, I see a little bit of myself. He knows when to make a move to overtake and, in my opinion, he seems a bit sharper than Lando. I don’t know how it will all turn out, but drivers like him usually make the most progress. I don’t know Lando well enough to give a proper judgment, but honestly, in this championship, the best driver should win.”
Oscar Piastri’s response
Oscar Piastri, naturally flattered by Alain Prost’s praise, shared his own thoughts on the comments. The McLaren driver acknowledged that he has heard similar comparisons before, but hearing it from a legend like Alain Prost carries extra weight. “I think, in some ways, we are quite different, but our mentality is similar: we try to be consistent,” Piastri explained.
The Australian also commented on the ongoing championship fight against his teammate Lando Norris. “You have to make sure to finish races, stay consistent, and avoid unnecessary risks. I think that aspect remains the same for both of us, but the motivations are probably quite different,” he added, highlighting both the competitive and strategic dimensions of their intra-team battle.
With Prost’s endorsement and Piastri’s measured response, the dynamic between McLaren’s two young stars continues to attract attention, showing that while talent is essential, mental approach, consistency, and racecraft remain just as crucial in the fight for the Formula 1 title.
